New Year’s Resolutions You Can (Probably) Stick With

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

New Year’s resolutions can be hard to stick with. We tell ourselves every year that we’re going to start going to the gym more often or eat out less but never stick with it for more than a month. Here are a few ideas for resolutions that aren’t too difficult to stick with.

1. Cut out soda.

Sodas are full of sugar, caffeine and other things that are bad for your body. Instead of having a soda with your dinner, try replacing it with something better for you, like tea or water. It may be hard at first, so just try limiting yourself to one a day and slowly go from there until you have gotten rid of them completely.

2. Be kinder.

Not only should you try to be kinder to others, but also to yourself. I feel like often times I am so distracted by trying to help others that I forget to help myself. Try to complete at least one act of kindness per day, for yourself or someone else.

3. Drink more water.

Try drinking the recommended 64 ounces of water per day and I promise your body will thank you. I know it seems like a lot but try working your way up to that amount slowly and soon you won’t even have to think about it.

4. Read more (for pleasure, not because you have to).

Reading is something I absolutely love to do but while classes are going on, I feel like I don’t have the time. However, I would if I replaced some of my Netflix time with reading time. I have a huge stack of books in my “to be read” pile at home and one of my resolutions is to actually get through them.

5. Start a journal.

Writing down your thoughts at the end of a stressful day is incredibly therapeutic. I recently got in the habit of doing this and it makes me feel much better each night. I always feel bad complaining about my “problems” to friends, so writing them down is a good way to get your thoughts out without feeling like a bother.

6. Practice Self Care.

Self care is different for everyone, for some it might mean treating yourself to a weekly face mask, for others it might mean taking a day off from work to relax. Whatever self care means to you, try and practice it more often. College can be stressful but it is also important to take time and relax.

Whatever your resolution may be, make 2018 your best year yet.
