DJ Courtney, Courtney Rivkind ’13

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

If you were at Sigma Chi this past Saturday for the Monster Energy Outbreak College Tour with CLMD, then you for sure witnessed, DJ Courtney. Meet Courtney Rivkin ’13, the winner of the Campus DJ competition, which featured 5 DJ’s from Emory, GA Tech, and Georgia State on March 26th at Scoreboards. This senior from Miami, FL now has the chance to compete at the National Finale competition in LA for the best student DJ. Her genres of music include House, Electro, Hip-Hop, and Indie. I know I enjoyed DJ Courtney’s set on Saturday, so get to know this campus celebrity outside of the DJ scene.

Her Campus Emory (HCE): When did you start DJ’ing?

Courtney Rivkind (CR): I started DJ’ing almost 6 years ago.

HCE: What was it like competing in the Campus DJ competition?

CR: It was very fun and exciting. It was cool to hear all the different styles from the other competitors.

HCE: Was Derby Days a success?

CR: Yes it was amazing; the set up was unreal. There was a stage under a big white tent, and LED lights. It was packed and everybody was dancing and having a lot fun. I had the best time performing. The best part was the crowd’s reaction to the music. Carl Louis and Martin Danielle also performed who are very accomplished DJs. Not only did I get to DJ with them, I also interviewed them. The video will be posted on my page soon!

HCE: Is it hard to be a female in such a male populated profession?

CR: At times it is. A lot of people doubt your DJ skills as a female, but if just makes you want to keep pushing and make yourself better. Once you get up and kill your set the haters will shut up!

HCE: What are you looking forward to at the National Finale in LA?

CR: I am looking forward to be able to meet all the talented DJs that won the regional competition. I am also so excited to perform and rock the crowd! There are also going to be a lot of interviews so that will be a lot. Also the winner of the competition wins a Mini Cooper!

HCE: Do you hope to pursue DJ’ing after college?

CR: Yes I do. I would love to be able to travel and DJ all over the world. I am also in the process of producing my own music, so I hope to be able to perform and share my sounds with the world!
