Why We Should All Live Like Ellen Degeneres

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

Hopefully you’ve all seen Ellen’s talk show and belly-laughed so hard it felt like you had just completed your ab workout for the day. Whether she makes you smile at her sarcastic jokes during her opening monologues or laugh along at her dance moves, she’s an inspiration to us all.

Ellen is known for her passion for life and entertaining sense of humor that connects people from all over. She is a beautiful person that we can all learn from, especially in today’s world. Some of her best qualities are ones that we can all be more conscious of within ourselves and make an effort to improve upon over time.

Want to live like Ellen Degeneres? Try these tips!

Be Generous.

Ellen shares her wealth every single day by raising money for charities, giving cars away to deserving audience members, or even just hugging those that she appreciates. We may not all be blessed with money (thank you, college tuition bills), but that doesn’t mean we can’t share our innate qualities with others. Hug the ones you love, pay for a stranger’s coffee, tell an uplifting story to a close friend, or even volunteer your time to work towards making a difference. It truly is the little things that count.

Follow Your Passions.

Ellen always says that she started her career as a comedian to make people laugh and bring them happiness. Her career has grown into so much more. This can happen for you, too! Pursue what you love with all of your heart and only the best intentions – this will lead you to brighter places. If nothing else, enjoy your journey of getting to where you want to be and continue working hard.

Be Nice.

It sounds so simple, right? Well, it can be. Being nice means being aware of your thoughts, actions, and even your facial expressions. I know I’m guilty of giving the occasional glare to people who annoy me at times (sorry), but this is something I can work towards changing. Be nice to the dressing room employees putting away the piles of clothing you didn’t want. Be nice to your friends who don’t deserve to be taken for granted. And be nice to yourself, you deserve to smile too.

Dance.

This is a favorite of mine. Dancing not only brings you great joy but it can make those around you smile, especially if they can tell you’re having fun. I know I always grin when Ellen dances her way through the audience with a smile plastered on her face. Be that girl who dances no matter who is watching.

Love.

Whether it’s loving what you do, loving your significant other, or loving your close friends and family, love fearlessly. Love comes and goes – cherish it once you find it. Ellen’s love ranges from her numerous pets to her incredibly beautiful wife Portia as well as her new lifestyle line ED and, of course, her practical jokes. She’s doing it right.

Ellen has taught me to strive to be my best self every single day. She is the most genuinely selfless role model any college woman could ask for. Thank you for the laughs, Ellen. I hope everyone makes an effort to be more like you, we could all benefit from a little less negativity.

And in the words of Ellen Degeneres, “Be kind to one another.”
