Five Ways to De-Stress (That Aren’t Netflix or Napping)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Davidson chapter.

Yes, my friends, it is that time of the year again! Ah exam time, the few weeks when almost everyone can be spotted sporting their best dark circles and anxious expressions around campus.

What a blast.

Don’t let that get you down though, because today I’m going to share a few de-stressing methods that you might not have thought of before. Now, disclaimer: if you’re a part of the stay-in-all-day-and-watch-90’s-romcoms camp, I won’t judge. You do what works for you! BUT, let’s face it, a girl needs some new options every now and again!

1st On Our List: Do some spring cleaning/organizing!

I learned about this one from a friend – she says that tidying up her room, (especially her desk) helps her clear her head and feel more in control of the day. In addition to cleaning, she’s a strong advocate for scheduling. As well as helping you know what you need to do and when, it can help you set aside time for relaxation!

2) Eat a healthy snack or meal!

Although it’s tempting to grab a bag of chips or candy bar, eating a more health-conscious snack can help you feel less stressed. When you eat junk food, it can make you feel bloated or lethargic, whereas if you choose something like an apple or carrots with hummus, your body gets essential nutrients it needs, and you won’t feel guilty.

3) Unplug for an hour!

Seriously, sometimes I think our technology stresses us out. Many people always feel the need to stay connected to their devices, but in reality, we need to give ourselves breaks. My favorite way to unplug is to read a novel, but the possibilities are endless! We have a beautiful campus here at Davidson, so go out and explore for a bit! Take a walk, visit the Farmer’s Market on a Saturday, get coffee with a friend, whatever floats your boat.

4) Treat yo’self to a spa day!

There’s nothing better than giving yourself an in-home spa treatment! It’s free, relaxing, and you’ll be glowing from head to toe afterwards! My recipe for the perfect spa day is to start with a clean canvas – take a nice, relaxing shower and take off your makeup. Then, exfoliate to remove dead skin buildup and moisturize. Follow with a face mask (I recommend sheet masks) and paint your nails a lively spring color! Here’s a list of my favorite skin care products you could use for your own spa day.

5) Get creative!

A fantastic way to de-stress is to give your brain a break from academics and exercise your creative side. Craft a special trinket for a friend, write and decorate a letter for a family member back home, anything is possible! I personally love to find new recipes on Pinterest and experiment with them in New Dorm (thanks for having a kitchen!). Homemade blueberry scones, anyone?

Good luck, and happy finals! You got this!
