Trust us– the English Club is an academic group that’s actually fun for everyone involved. (Like The Hunger Games? The Professor-run Book Club is reading it now!) Just ask club president Sam Bower. This highly-motivated senior dedicates a majority of her extracurricular time to this club, and her passion for literature is contagious. She also just happens to be a marathon runner.
What is your main goal as English Club President?
As English Club President, I just want people to get excited about the vast amounts of literature that there are out there. Our department is so large, the club is a great way to focus in on different topics each semester and understand the focus of many of the professors. Also, the club brings things down to scale so that you can connect with your peers to better understand the content of courses.
Where do you hope the club will go in the coming semesters?
I hope the club continues to get bigger and bigger, and that there are more opportunities to read and discuss books.
What kinds of events have you hosted?
In the fall there is a High Tea to socialize with the Professors and students. In the Spring, we are starting an annual Senior Dinner. Twice a year, there is a Professor run Book Club (Hunger Games this semester). We are also having a movie night on April 2nd featuring Jane Eyre at the Campus theatre.
What makes the English Club stand apart from other organizations on campus?
English Club is one of the only extracurricular activities that demand more academic work outside of classes. However, this also makes it more relevant to everyday life. You can’t unread a book that you have read and discussed in English Club, nor can you reproduce a discussion with a Professor. And you never know when these things will be useful.
How can we get involved?
Come support the events! Open to all English Majors, Creative Writing Majors, and Film Studies Majors.
