Whenever a new season rolls around, there’s always a slight panic. That panic usually consists of me thinking I have absolutely nothing to wear for the given temperature, trends, and taste of Boston.

After reading, Transitional Outfit Choices for Fall, by our very own Rebecca Shinners, I was totally inspired to make use of the pieces I already have and create a fresh, fashionable, fall wardrobe. Unfortunately, I’m also interning this semester, so some of my outfits to class have to be cute, yet still agree with the business casual guidelines my office sets. Here are some tips I have for how to approach the ‘Autumn Office’ look:

Neutrals

Fall for me is quite the catch 22. Neutrals and dark colors are always my first choice when the sun sets earlier and there are less opportunities to wear that pink seersucker skirt. One of the issues I always struggle with, however, is matching neutrals! Is black on black too much black? Does this oatmeal match the white? One of my solutions is to throw in a pop of color whether it’s a deep blue necklace, or fun scarf. It helps me to balance out my color combinations. I also feel that gold or silver accents compliment any neutral color pallet. I loved this article from Lucky showcasing ways to embrace the neutral trend, yet keep it fun and upbeat!

Layers

If the changing weather outside isn’t bad enough, who else can’t stand the temperatures in their office? One minute the AC is blasting, the other minute it’s a sauna. My blazer is definitely off and on throughout the day so layering is essential to maintaining homeostasis throughout my work-day. One item I love is a trendy blazer. It’s a bit more casual if you have class before or after work, but I also find it so much more aesthetically pleasing than the traditionally stiff black blazer. Whether it’s a unique fold, arm, or color  – a unique blazer will definitely make you stand out in an office appropriate way.

Shoes

The changing seasons not only bring about changing temperatures, but new threats as well: rain, snow, sleet, you name it and Boston has it. Although flats are always my go-to shoe for the office, it just isn’t an option during the winter months. A new trend I’m obsessed with is the bootie! It’s great for a colder day, without such harsh conditions. The riding boot is always ideal when it gets cold, but be sure to waterproof it – those are expensive and you don’t want it to be completely destroyed after only one season! I also can’t survive without my Hunter rain boots. They might be the typical choice among collegiate women, but they just can’t be beat. Always make sure you have a pair of black or neutral flats to throw in your bag when you bring the Hunters though!

What are your office appropriate trends for the season?
