Her Campus Nottingham's Foodie Guide to Nottingham: Top 7 Picks

2/27/2013

Bored of the normal chain restaurants that are scattered around the Cornerhouse and Victoria Centre in town? While Nandos and T.G.I Friday’s are always safe and satisfying for a cheeky meal out, it’s always exciting to go somewhere new. Here are our top seven picks from what Nottingham’s food scene has to offer.

1. Warsaw Diner

Open from 9am till 2:30pm, this spot is perfect to cure your hangover after a heavy night out. Warsaw Diner is a Polish-American style diner offering up a variety of fresh pancakes, Polish sausages and all the fixings for a much-needed fry up.

93-95 Derby Road, City Centre, Nottingham, NG1 5BB, 0115 950 8500

 2. Tropeiro

This one is for all you meat-lovers out there. With all-you-can-eat for around £10-12 for lunch or dinner, you get a true Brazilian dining experience. A selection of ten spit-roasted meats will be served to you tableside as you help yourself to their unlimited salad and hot sides bar. On your table you’ll find a card with green on one side and red on the other—keep the green side up and the meat will keep coming.

Our favourites are the chicken thighs marinated in chilli and garlic, roasted cap of rump, Brazilian roast potatoes and vegetable stew.

Nottingham Winter Wonderland: Christmas Market

12/10/2012

December is finally here and while a lot of us are struggling to meet end of term deadlines, they will soon be over so take this as an opportunity to get an early start on all the festivities.

Not only has the National Ice Centre been transformed into a Christmas rink with fairy lights and decorations, but the Nottingham Christmas market is also back with a 40m Christmas tree right in the centre of town. New this year is the two-storey Victorian bar where you can enjoy festive food, mulled wine, cider, local ale and homemade hot Gluhwein.

At the food stalls you will be able to choose from Cadbury’s Christmas selection of hot chocolates with peppermint, caramel, whipped cream and much more. Among the Belgium frites, waffles and paella, our favourites were the German sausage stall which charges £4 for a sausage of your choice, a bun and all the fixings as well as the Poffertjes (mini Dutch pancakes) stall that offers a choice of melted chocolate, nutella, syrup, fresh strawberries, bananas, marshmallows and whipped cream toppings starting from £2.50 for two.

Watching The Calories: 6 Skinny Cocktails to Keep You Drinking

11/12/2012

While a double vodka coke doesn’t necessarily count as a cocktail, drinking at the rate that we do as students means that not only are we piling on the calories, but we also risk drinking beyond the point of what our body can actually take.

Rather than cutting back on the alcohol, here are some go-to drinks that are about as healthy as you can get without giving it up completely!

1. Vodka Tonic/Diet Lemonade

If you’re at a pre-lash or getting a quick drink at the bar in a club, you won’t have much time to taste your drink anyway, so for the tiny cost of a slightly stronger taste of vodka you limit the damage to only 70-80 calories per drink as opposed to the usual 130 calories.

2.  Mojito

Made up of Bacardi, fresh mint, lime juice and soda water, this is a refreshing and simple cocktail that will cut back on the weight gain. Most bars will have this classic on their menu, but if you’re looking to have a few quiet drinks head over to All Bar One—they have a special ‘Skinny mojito’ that uses Agave syrup instead of sugar and juice.

8 Ways to Beat Stress This Semester

10/15/2012

Term started up even later this year, which means quite a few of us are already starting to worry about upcoming assessments. Regardless if you’re a fresher, a second, third, or even fourth year, getting adjusted to the amount of reading and work you need to do is never as easy as it seems. Overwhelmed? Don’t be! Here are some great tips to keep your stress levels down.

1. Stay organised

Get a diary or use the calendar on your e-mail, laptop or phone, and put in all your seminars, lectures and assessment dates so you know well in advance when your busiest weeks are. Essays can creep up on you before you know it, so get into the habit of frequently updating and checking your calendar.

2. Have a ‘library day’

Pick one day of the week where you dedicate most of the day to working or reading. It sounds intense but it gets stuff out of the way and keeps you on top of your workload, leaving you free to do something more fun when you don’t have to be on campus! If it seems daunting to go by yourself, get some friends to go with you. Having them there is not only comforting, but encouraging as well.

3. Quit complaining and do something

What's New On Campus

10/8/2012

Now that freshers’ week is officially over, refreshers and returners alike have finally started to flock onto campus for reasons other than getting a head start on campus 14 or grabbing a pint at Mooch. To help you get into the swing of things we’ve compiled a short list of what’s new on campus this year.

Buses

Aside from the usual Jubilee, Sutton Bonington and King’s Meadow hopper buses, the most popular bus by far is the 34 as it goes right through campus, down Derby road and into town for just £1. Some of you will have realised that the price has increased to £199 for the Nottingham City Transport (NCT) unlimited academic year pass for this year – but don’t let this put you off! You can now use your bus pass during winter and Easter break. On top of this NCT has introduced new N4 and N34 buses that run from town to campus and back from Monday to Saturday during term time all night, which saves you taking a taxi.

“There’s also a new smartphone app you can download that tells you exactly when the bus is due,” shares Dan Lee, a third year economic student. “Now I don’t have to end up waiting for the bus for 15 minutes in the cold or when it’s raining ‘cause I’ll know when it’s running late.”

The £199 “Academic Year Offer” is available until 13th October 2012, and you can get one from the travel centre in Portland Building or online here. There’s even a new live bus timetable display outside Hallward!
