Her Campus Tufts Screens Girl Rising

5/16/2013

On April 24th Her Campus Tufts was proud to screen a new documentary on the global importance of educating girls. The documentary, Girl Rising, told the real life stories of 9 girls around the world and the amazing impact that education has had on their lives. Their stories are narrated by celebs including: Meryl Streep, Selena Gomez, Kerry Washington, Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloë Moretz, Liam Neeson, and Frieda Pinto. It was a touching documentary that Her Campus Tufts was happy we exposed the Tufts University community to.

Girl Rising has had an unusual journey and eager viewers cannot always find the documentary screening at their local theater. The film was created by 10x10. 10x10 is a global action campaign for girls' education. Centered by the new feature film, Girl Rising, 10x10 uses the power of storytelling and the leverage of strategic partnerships to deliver a simple, critical truth: Educate Girls and you will Change the World, and in doing so have flawlessly interwoven advocacy and filmmaking into a new progressive framework. To view the film, people have the opportunity to host their own screenings or to request it on Gathr, a new social tool where viewers can request movies they want to see in order to get them shown at their local theaters.

Rialto: A Classier Dining Destination

4/30/2013

Looking for a nicer spot to take the parents next time they’re in town? The restaurant & bar Rialto, located in Harvard Square, is a great option.  The restaurant, which is tucked inside the Charles Hotel, is one of the top 25 hotel restaurants in the country. In addition its head chef, Jody Adams, was named one of America’s best young chefs to keep your eye on in a 1992 copy of Esquire and went on to win a James Beard award for her work. Rialto offers a good array of your Italian favorites, from garlicky risotto to lasagna Bolognese, in addition to some more unique culinary finds. Visitors can savor the food of Italy on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace (just in time for the warm weather!).

Beyond impressing the 'rents, even within the restaurant’s classy ambiance, you can still partake in some amazing college deals, however the quality of the food will not lag (this is not your average wing night or 2 a.m. pizza).  Rialto offer $10 burger night at the bar on Sundays and $1 oysters on Mondays.  For Collegiettes looking to develop their culinary prowess Rialto also offers cooking classes with a 20% off discount to college students.

Why Now is the Best Time of Your Life to Travel

4/28/2013

Have the urge to see more of the world? To spend a week, maybe two (or four) immersed in another culture? For collegiettes who are craving a global getaway these college years are the perfect time to do so. It may seem that we have a lot to deal with as college students (homework, extracurriculars, internships, etc.), but now is probably the most worry-free we will ever be. So if you need a little extra motivation (or some great persuasive argument points), we’ve got you covered with the points listed below.

1. I do not have a fulltime job yet, a mortgage to pay off, or other people to take care of.

2. It’s cheaper now to travel with all the amazing airfare deals.

3. Showing that I have participated in a program abroad will make me a more well rounded job applicant. It will look great on my resume.

4. I won’t even have to worry about who will take care of the kids! I don’t have any.

5. I can learn to be more responsible and independent before I go off into the real world after college.

6. It will be cheaper now than later because I can stay in youth hostels and do organized trips with great deals like Contiki.

What Are You Currently Listening To: Madness from Muse. Sums up the campaign!

Most Beloved Possession: Probably my piano at home, because I played it every day for years. It was handed down to us when my Grandma passed away.

Dewick or Carmichael: I’m a loyal Hill Hall Freshman. Carm. Obviously.

Have you ever painted the cannon? Of course! If you haven’t, do it tonight! I’ve painted it for Senate, for campaigns, for ChiO, and for fun.

Dewick or Carmichael? Carm is by far superior…

The Best Eco-Friendly Beauty Brands for Earth Day

4/22/2013

Have you ever thought to look at the ingredients of your cosmetics before applying them to your face? For most collegiettes the answer is: probably not, its not like you’re eating it or anything! That is why it’s shocking to find that most of the cosmetics we use everyday may contain harmful chemicals, including human carcinogens and skin-disease causing agents.

In light of the celebration of Earth Day today, it might be time to take a little look at what exactly you are putting on your skin, and to find some more healthy and green alternatives. Her Campus got the scoop on what beauty brands you should grab and where to shop in order to lead a more healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle.

1. Burt’s Bees is probably the most popular green brand that is widely available. You can find this brand on drugstore shelves from CVS, to Target, to Walgreen’s. Natural or not, their lip care line is one of the best. For collegiettes looking for a “quick fix”  for some fabulously soft lips and glowing skin, this should be your go-to brand.

2. Tarte Cosmetics is stocked like any big beauty brand with poppy and fresh finds. Collegiettes will find an array of products from bronzers to eye shadow primer at affordable prices. You can get Tarte products online or at big beauty product retailers such as Ulta and Sephora.

The Best Travel Movies & How To Go On a Trip Of Your Own

4/19/2013

College is the best time to travel. Collegiettes have a ton of extra down time on excessively long breaks, (hopefully) extra spending money from summer internships, and no real responsibilities yet (like a fulltime job and family of four). The following flicks may just inspire collegiettes to take a trip of their own. But, if you so are so inspired, we’ve included the culture-heavy, adventure packed Contiki trips that will ensure that collegiettes have as grand of a time as the characters in each film on their own adventures.

1. Vicky Christina Barcelona

This movie tells the story of two American women, Vicky and Christina, and their adventures in Spain, after they both become tantalized by the same man. Hopefully for them, what happens in Spain, stays in Spain.

Have an affair of your own in Spain by traveling with Contiki on a Spanish Spree. The trip packs in the perfect combination of cultural excursions and partying. Adventurers will visit much more than just Barcelona, and will get to see 6 other Spanish cities include global party island: Ibiza.

2. The Motorcycle Diaries

New Sororities To Come To Tufts

4/17/2013

For the Jumbos who have yet to hear- Greek life will be expanding at Tufts come next year. The reason for the extension? Sororities are apparently in high demand at Tufts! In addition, many Tufts women don’t feel that they have found a fit within the existing three. After a lengthy deliberation process two new sororities will be added to the existing three, bringing the number of sororities to a grand total of FIVE (Did someone say state school?). Her Campus Tufts sat down with the Pan-Hellenic Extension Chairwoman (and co-President of Her Campus) Alex Horvitz to get the inside scoop on what will go down next fall.

So, how many Greek chapters does Tufts currently have?

Tufts currently has 9 fraternities, 1 co-ed local fraternity, and 3 sororities.

What is the extension committee and what members of the Tufts community were on the committee?

The extension committee is the committee that worked for the past year on selecting the new organizations for this campus. It was made up of 2 sisters from each existing sorority, 1 advisor from each sorority, the Chairwoman of Extension and Director of Programming for Panhellenic Council, Alex Horvitz, the Panhellenic President, Carolyn Pruitt, and the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Su McGlone.

What was the process like to pick the new sororities?
