Fashion Icons Today: Dorothy Dandridge

6/2/2012

As the first African-American actress to ever be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, Dorothy Dandridge hardly needed to prove herself in other fields. True to her legendary presence, however, she left an unmistakable mark in the field of fashion. Her knack to nail both classy and sexy at the same time cemented her ability to remain a sultry star of the Hollywood lights- an impact that is lasting long into 2012.

Shirt, Shoes, Hat, Skirt

A trendsetter in every way, Dandridge was ahead of the curve on the floppy hat trend. To make it every day-wear friendly, we passed on the sparkles and chose a versatile felt material instead. The black skirt with a demure cut is given a pop of color and sass with a kimono style red tunic with breezy cutouts. Tucking the top into the skirt leaves room also draw attention to a pair of stunning suede lace-up wedges- and you’re set!

What We Wore This Week: Shoe Edition...Rebekah

5/23/2012

Color-blocking is the coolest thing on the block this spring season. So I love this black and nude cap-toe version of the trend! They're casual enough for class but are polished for work too. The best part...they were a steal from Old Navy for only $15!

Fashion Icons Today: Denise Huxtable

5/16/2012

The Cosby Show may have run in the 80’s but it was a permanent fixture of my 90’s childhood. Even in my wee years I wasn’t blind to the amazing-ness of Denise Huxtable’s closet. With her ever-changing hairstyles, fearless makeup techniques and charming free-spirit (discovering America anyone? or studying the pygmy’s in Africa? or getting hit by Stevie Wonder,) I for one, framed my middle school first-day-back outfits solely on her boho-Brooklyn style that never failed to surprise. Needless to say, I often failed miserably, but taking cues from today’s fashion, we can still channel Denise and rock the 80’s like there’s no tomorrow.

What is the background behind the I Am A ______ campaign?
If you saw the movie with Kellyn talking, after he was done talking, that we had a brainstorm with the people that were there. We started talking about: “What are we going to do? We gotta do something. We gotta get the word out so people know what happened.”…And the problem was that people have all these different labels…and this campaign was just trying to put those things out there…to say: “This is what someone may see me as, but I’m not that, I’m something else. That label you want to attach to me is not who I am.” That’s why we had all these “I Am’s.” And there’s also a Tumblr with all the different stories [http://nucollectivestories.tumblr.com]…it’s about our stories being told and not what the media may attach to us...but what are we going to claim…that was the point in having a bold title to get people to go look at the Tumblr. The Tumblr was the most important part, to get people to see the stories that are there.

Fashion Icons Today: Princess Diana

5/5/2012

The classics never do actually fade and nothing in fashion is ever really new. We draw on the icons because that’s what they are- examples of what always work in fashion. This week, we take a look into the closet of the People’s Princess, Lady Diana, for a taste of royal fashion in 2012. (Kate Middleton, take notes!)

DIY Beauty Reviews

4/30/2012

Wouldn’t we all love the chance to pamper ourselves after a hellish week of papers, midterms, work and religiously watching Friday Night Lights? The hitch is that those services and products are often just a tad out of the reach of the bare and dusty folds of our collegiate wallets. But just because you might not be able to buy your way to relaxation just yet there are still a few crafty tricks you can pull out to take some time out for yourself.

We test-drived two DIY spa recipes based off of ingredients you’re bound to find in your kitchen. These natural ingredients are actually often times the same ones that go into the pricey treatments at salons. Now you can get the same treatment, without breaking the bank, and while wearing your fuzzy socks at home!

Your New Guilty Pleasure: Jam Sesh

Reality shows are more often than not our guilty pleasures of choice. With the widespread attention they have received, it only makes sense that they have made their way into Northwestern's campus life. Jam Sesh is the first reality show of its kind to represent a part of Northwestern student life and premieres today on NUChannel1.

The NU students who created the reality show are also its directors. The show at its heart is a reality music show, completely student-run and student-focused.

Bobby Ramirez, a co-director of the show, broke down the process the contestants will follow once they sign onto the project: “Each artist/group is given the same exact song to rewrite and adapt into their own sound and style, we check up on them and track their progression with the challenge song. They go through multiple levels of criticism, performing for their competitors and receiving feedback from each other, as well as receiving feedback from a panel of judges and online viewer poles."

The grand finale of the show is an open live event where each artist will perform their version and the viewers get to vote for their favorite! The prize is a music video courtesy made by The Jam Sesh, along with bragging rights.

The idea for this show has been in the works since Wildcat Welcome. The early seed for the show was planted in Cutie DS Shin’s mind after watching campus music groups performing during Wildcat Welcome.

“I was into the Northwestern music scene…and I wanted to create something that could connect with a lot of Northwestern students," said Shin. "I approached NUCH1 with the idea…then I got Bobby Ramirez.”

Hunger Games Fashion How-To

4/9/2012

The Hunger Games hardly need an introduction. The movie has swept the nation, easily topping all the Twilight premieres in their first week at the box office. The book series is the new “it-read” for guys and girls alike. This past week, I found myself engaged in at least three serious conversations about the thematic elements and metaphors found in the books. HC is here to feed your obsession. Taking inspiration from the movie, we’ve created outfits that best reflect some of the most important scenes in the movie. Good luck in your styling, and may the odds ever be in your favor. (Sorry, but I had to slip it in somewhere!)

GES Directors Mavara Agha & Sarah Freeman

4/8/2012

In the midst of chaotic final preparation for Global Engagement Summit 2012, the lovely and wonderful co-directors of the organization took the time to sit down and chat with HC for a bit about their reflections on GES and future movie aspirations.

Names: Mavara Agha & Sarah Freeman
Year: Seniors

When and how did you get involved in GES?

Mavara:I joined in my sophomore year and I was looking for a strong sense of community. I knew a couple people in GES beforehand, and I joined and just fell into it!

Sarah: I came in as a freshman. I wanted a cool group of people that was interested in international stuff. They sucked me in at the activities fair, I came to the first meeting and I’ve been involved ever since.

As Co-Directors what are some of the responsibilities you have?

S:We oversee all the teams, that’s what people normally think of. [In addition] Co-Directors kind of make sure all the puzzle pieces are working together at once and that people are communicating with each other. The way I like to see it that our job is to make everyone else’s lives easier…

It's All In The Bag: A Peek Into One Collegiette's Purse

4/3/2012

Truthfully, on most days, I can be seen with some version of a cross-body purseslung over my shoulder carrying only my wallet, keys and phone. Over spring break, however, I purchased a tote for class, which was a stylish update to my dull backpack. I suddenly have so many more things I can carry around with me. Here’s a peek inside the organized chaos that ensues inside my purse!

1. This gorgeous cream/beige tote with gold hardware was a steal from TJMaxx for only $24. The quilted pattern lets me pretend I’m actually running around with vintage Chanel. A girl can dream, right?

2. This water bottle was another TJMaxx find that I love. The bright purple color is a must for every true Wildcat and the plastic material doesn’t give my water a funny metallic taste that I hate.
