Campus Cutie: Kyle Provo

5/16/2013

Ladies, meet Kyle Provo! He is probably the most entertaining interviewee I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Don’t let his sarcastic façade fool you; he’s full of humor and quite the gentleman (he made special plans for his mom this past Mother’s Day). Don’t miss out on your chance to get to know him!

Year: Senior

Major: Journalism – Advertising

Hometown: Eugene, Oregon

Relationship status: Single

HCO: Why did you choose to come to UO?

Originally I came here for the art program because it’s really good, but then I ended up switching to Ad. Plus, it was a really easy move from home!

HCO: What three words would you use to describe yourself?

I would say I’m sarcastic (definitely), wyld with a y because it’s a wild way to spell wild, and scrumtrelescent. Will Ferrell used that word in an episode of SNL.

HCO: What is the first thing you notice about a girl?

I’d say the first thing I notice about a girl is her face because that’s the first thing I see when I talk to them.

HCO: What is your biggest turn off?

One-sided conversation; introverts kind of weird me out because it’s awkward to talk to them!

HCO: Describe your ideal date.

Tank Top Workout

5/3/2013

Summer is quickly approaching, which means it’s time to put away your sweaters and pull out your sleeveless, strapless, and backless tops, or dresses.

Tank tops expose a majority of your upper body (shoulders, arms, upper back, and chest). Try out this 15-minute “tiny tank-top workout” that will help tone your muscles and help you look great in a tank-top for the summer.

1. Standing V Raise: Take a lightweight dumbbell in each hand (about 2-8 pounds). Stand with your feet at shoulder width apart, and your arms at your sides. With your arms straight (not locked), raise the weights in a V shape until your arms are parallel with the floor, then return back to start. Do 12-15 reps, three times.

2. Shoulder Press: Take lightweight dumbbells in each hand and stand with your feet shoulder width apart, and your knees a little bent. Hold your dumbbells just above your shoulders, and palms facing in. Press your weights up until your arms are straight above your head. Hold your dumbbells above your head for one second, and then take three seconds to lower back down to your shoulders. Do six-to-eight reps, three times.

Year: Junior

What is your major/minor: I’m majoring in sociology, and I have a minor in writing, critical reasoning, and public speaking.

Hometown: Hillsboro, Oregon

What inspired you to do Motivational Monday’s? About a year ago when I started feeling better and less controlled by my anxiety, I began to observe how much of the social media is used for complaining and negativity. I would post motivational quotes that hit home with my own development onto my Facebook page, and I was involved in student government with the school I went to in Southern California. The student body president noticed these posts and asked if I would talk at the end of our Monday night meetings. The first time I opened up and told my story and my struggle with anxiety and the depression that came after my dad passed away. It was the first time I opened up in front of a large group of people and I loved the challenge of public speaking, something I've feared my whole life. After that, I felt more comfortable telling my story and eventually Motivational Mondays from student government meetings transformed into a weekly video!

Five Fall Favorites: 2012 Fall Fashion Trends

10/25/2012

The rain is starting come down, which means it’s officially fall! Autumn marks a great time to take out cold weather accessories like, scarves, mittens, leg warmers and more! However the fall season also marks the end of summer trends! Check out what five items will be trending this fall!

The Ankle Boot
Yes, boots have always been an autumn favorite, but this year it’s time to take it to a shorter level! Everyone has rocked the mid length, and even the knee length boot. This year it’s time to change it up with an edgier look. Ankle boots go great with absolutely everything, from skinny jeans, to skirts and tights! Wear them as much as possible to give them a “worn in look”, which is perfect for a rainy day.

The "Nubby" Cardigan
Other fall favorites are cardigans! This year try a “nubby” cardigan. It’s thicker than other cardigans, which means it will keep you warm, and it goes with just about anything! The nubby cardigan is great for a night out for dinner or just a cozy look around campus. Try this look with the ankle boot shown above, and a neutral flannel.

Campus Celebrity: Megan Bauer

10/14/2012

Some of you may know Megan Bauer from the School of Journalism and Communications here on campus. Others may know her from a dance, economics or even a psych course. Either way, this public relations/advertising double major with minors in dance, econ, and psych is one busy girl. She just finished up an internship with JetBlue Airways in New York City this summer, and has several other internships under her belt. She is hard working, ambitious, and full of personality. Check out this Q&A session she had with Her Campus Oregon.

What made you decide on becoming a PR/Ad major?
I originally started out as a pre-med major because I wanted to make a difference in the community. After doing two terms of chemistry and being completely miserable, I decided to take a step back and rethink all my classes and what I was interested in. I went to different guidance councilors to figure out my options, and finally met with Bill Morrill, who introduced me to the PR major—which I immediately knew was for me! After being in the School of Journalism, I started hearing more about the ad major and got really interested in the creative side of communications. At first I was stuck between both majors in my mind, but then decided that PR was my primary focus, and that I could use advertising to enhance my PR passion through the use of creative ideas.

What is your favorite aspect about PR/Ad?
I've always said that my happiest time would be sitting and talking to people all day long, that is what I truly love to do! My favorite part of public relations is the networking aspect. I like hearing about individual people’s stories because I think you can learn a lot by listening to people’s history and where they came from.

From Runway to Closet: Fashion Week Trends that Work

9/16/2012

As many of you may know, it’s fashion week in New York! In favor of this regal occasion, this week’s blog takes a closer look at the trends of this coming year. Check out what outfits were featured at Fashion’s Night Out in San Diego (Pictures taken by UO alumni Martin Torres)

One of the trending looks this season will be the a-line dress! It flatters any body type because an a-line appears to give the shape of an hourglass figure. This type of dress can be worn casual, or you can throw on a blazer for a career to look to your upcoming internship or interview. For the best looks wear a solid color dress and make it pop with a hot pair of heels!

The next look that will be trending this year is a denim top! This top will be popular because it’s so versatile. Throw it on with a popping colored pair of pants like the model below for a bold look, or throw on a cute floral skirt for an effortless chic look. Or you can just throw on a scarf as your only accessory for a simple, and glamorous look.

Although the pencil skirt has been popular in the office, it’s time to take it out and wear it to any occasion! The pencil skirt can easily make you look sexy, but classy, because of the knee length. It hugs your hips and makes your legs look longer than they appear. The best part is that there are so many pencil skirts in a variety of colors and patterns, so there’s a look for anyone. This look goes great with a pair of wedges and a simple tee tucked in. For a night out with the girl’s just throw on a pair of high heels to take the look from day to night.

Fall Fashion: What To Have In Your Closet

8/24/2012

Summer is slowly dwindling to an end, and it’s time to start back-to-school shopping! Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish which trends are ending with the summer season, and which will be a hit this fall term, so check out which top five pieces will help you look your best!

Ditch the fitted blazer look and shop for long blazers this fall season! It’s a menswear-inspired look that pairs great with a simple tank top and denim pants, or even with a summer dress you don’t want to part with - just throw on some tights!

We’ve all seen those celebs rocking the boyfriend-fit jeans, and this fall you can too because they are still very much in and trendy! They're cute in an effortless way, not to mention the fact that they are super comfortable! Make sure to wear them with fitted, layered tops for a chic look!

Another pair of jeans that are making a come back are high-waisted jeans! They flatter your waist because they are form-fitting at the smallest part, and since they are high, they don’t squish your sides, meaning no muffin top! Pair these jeans with a shirt that’s a little bit more loose, but tucked in!
