A Friend Named Sim

4/22/2012

Let me tell you a love story.  Better yet, let me tell you one we can all relate to, without much sappiness or emotion involved. But this is indeed a love story; it is one that includes companions that are together till the end.

Imagine a relationship where on the very first encounter there is an overwhelming feeling of excitement and newness swelling within you. You quickly find that this newfound friend serves as a convenient means of escape from reality. The more you delve into this relationship the harder it is to envision yourself without it. Dependency begins to sneakily make its way into this freshly formed bond.

Now imagine, through a sudden slip, you hurt your other half. Accidents happen, of course. But instead of the ever-long fight that usually ensues, you find that, in only a short period of time, your relationship is practically anew. Now, with the idea that you never have to be conscientious of how you treat your friend, the relationship becomes the strongest, yet shallowest one ever invented.

Although this bond might seem uncanny, it’s one we are all surely experiencing, not with people, but with our cell phones. With all their versatility and wonder we forget what they actually are, a piece of plastic. How can we ask anything more from them? Yet, we do as we continue to create and make them better.

Technology is deceiving. With the possibility of opening up and learning about different cultures and people, we’ve become even more closed-minded. Condensed, faster, more efficient, that’s all we care about. It all draws down to the classic tale of the turtle and the hare and we all know who won that race.

Own The Night

4/9/2012

Has the night ever taken you? Has it ever stolen that shy, insecure you and traded it for someone incredible, invincible, and infinite? And you frolic and dance in this new, glamorous skin until the taste of the relentless morning wakes you, only to find that the night has reclaimed what was inevitably never yours to play with. You feel cheated. You feel that you somehow allowed that dark, slippery, sly thief strip you clean of that shameless persona you thought was yours to keep.

The night is cunningly and magnificently powerful. There are some who are fully aware of its force and saunter on into its grimy clutches; drinking, howling, and waiting to be swept completely away.  I, on the other hand, have learned to guard myself  (kind of). I like to think that I have the strength and poise to fight what so many have been defeated by. I like to think that I’m different, as I gloss my lips and slip into my curve-hugging skirt. I understand the hazards and willingly gamble with the night. I make playful little bets. Just watch me slip away from your menacing touch! The hangover the next morning is only a small token of my usual defeat. Another futile attempt to conquer the unconquerable.

Obsession Confession: Azealia Banks

3/18/2012

Recently, while browsing through P4k’s Top 100, I came across a potty-mouthed, feisty gem of a rapper. And thus, my obsession was born. Azealia Banks is not only the freshest and newest female rapper out there; she’s the real deal. When listening to “212”, it is hard to ignore her blatant vulgarity but it just sounds so right against the electro-pop tune and multi-layered beats.  The video for her debut single is simple yet captivating, with the Harlem native clad in a Mickey Mouse sweater and worn jean shorts – chic, iconic, and definitely obsess-worthy.

If you find yourself wanting more from Banks know that her much anticipated debut album, Broke with Expensive Taste, comes out this September.  Also, check out her other singles like “Liquorice”, “Bambi”, and “NEEDSUMLUV.”

Don’t be fooled by the young MC’s bug-eyed expressions and multiple, characteristic voices; she is no Nicki Minaj. Although there are subtle similarities between the two, there is a raw and biting talent in Banks that just cannot be compared to any female rapper in the business. This leaves Banks raging a foreboding threat that could very well act as a wake-up call for all those who inhabit the female MC realm -- “B*tch, the end of your lives are near/ This sh*t been mine, mine.”

Lana Del Rey: Indie-Pop Princess

2/26/2012

What happens when swoon-worthy pop meets vintage? Why, Lana Del Rey, of course. A newfound phenomenon in the realm of popular music, Lana Del Rey is breaking boundaries in a curious manner. Born Lizzie Grant, the New York singer/songwriter has recently released a debut album, Born to Die with two widely acclaimed singles, “Video Games” and “Born to Die”, which have both received over 25 million hits on YouTube.

What makes Del Rey so different is her ability to musically and fashionably combine the subdued, grainy style of vintage and the glitz of pop. Unlike most artists in the music business who have relied on creating boisterous images of themselves in order to stand out, Del Rey has taken on a refreshingly retro-glam representation. She is taking the indie flair that has been brewing behind the backdrops of popular culture and daringly bringing it the forefront. Her success in accomplishing such a feat is largely due to the fact that she has the foundations to carry such an image into the pop sphere, a gorgeous face and interesting voice – basically everything needed to make a successful popular idol. With these two necessities at hand, she unfalteringly encompasses the two usually divergent territories of the music industry.
