Bay Area Music Roundup

10/10/2012

If you haven’t been to a concert recently, you probably know someone who has. This past weekend there were almost too many shows to see in the Bay Area. If you didn’t get to catch anything this past weekend don’t worry, I have some recommendations for shows soon to come!

Our very own campus group Superb has recently been pulling out all of the stops. Two weeks ago Father John Misty was on Lower Sproul highlighting his new album that he preformed at Outside Lands Music Festival. This past Friday, Teebs and Tokimonsta hit Lower Sproul with great DJ sets. UC Berkeley’s own JayFunkY from elecTONIC opened for the pair. You could have also caught JayFunkY DJ-ing the Delta Chi homecoming game day on Saturday.

Other amazing shows that went down this past weekend include Jason Mraz and Florence and the Machine. Mraz appeared at our Greek Theatre while Florence was at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. Shoreline is also home to the famous acoustic benefit concert presented by Neil Young every year, The Bridge School Benefit Concert. Be sure to get a group of friends together for cheap lawn seats and enjoy the sweet sounds of Foster the People, Jack White, Gun n’ Roses and many more (Oct. 20-21)!

Com'e, Com'era: London Layover

3/11/2012

Read Mary's intro to her Blog series here and check out her photos here!

The first leg of my journey starts in London for a layover in Florence, Italy for two weeks and some amazing day trips in between.  After this I will be headed to Rome for my main stay in the eternal city.  Sounds lofty, but it’s true.

I hope my blog captures my experiences so you can have a glimpse into my daily life and travels. I also want to share travel tips, the best food, my favorite going out stops, and anything else that I stumble upon that I think you should know about.  I’d like to first tell you about a place that I fell in love with upon arrival.

Although I was only here for two days it was the perfect way to start my European adventure, London.  Everyone speaks English and I can read all of the signs; even the ones on the street that tell you which way to look before crossing.  We stayed right in the center of London and this is where I first met most of the students in my study abroad program.  It’s a lot like freshman year so I had to dig deep to find that eager spirit that helped me gain many friends quickly.  Except this time we weren’t navigating classrooms in Dwinelle, we were trying to find our way around a foreign international city.

Mary Aiello, Com’è, Com’era

3/4/2012

Ciao HerCampus! My name is Mary (Marell) Aiello.  I am a third year at UC Berkeley and currently traveling Europe with my main stay in Rome, Italy.  I hope you enjoy my travels with me as I share with you the sights, experiences, and of course tastes of the Eternal City and places in between.

I will be writing a study abroad blog for Her Campus called, “Com’è, Com’era” (How it is, How it was).  This phrase describes Rome and its rich history; a history that overwhelms me everyday.

Her Campus: What courses are you taking abroad?
Mary Aiello: Well, at Berkeley I am a Philosophy major.  I truly love Philosophy and the Philosophy department. People always ask me what we Philosophy majors do and I tell them a lot of reading, writing, and well, philosophizing. In Italy my course work is a little (very) different and I’m not afraid to say that most of my learning experiences are, “outside of the classroom.”

The Big Game Bucketlist

11/18/2011

Today I walked by what I assumed to be a fraternity fundraiser.  It featured an old car at the mercy of students willing to donate to a good cause in turn to smash and damage for one minute on the clock.  The beaten car was also spray painted with the phrase “Stanfurd Sux.”  Then I remembered, It’s Big Game Week.

Once a year comes an event that exemplifies school spirit and a rivalry steeped in age-old tradition.   If this is your first Big Game week or your last (as a student) there are a few things to check off your Big Game Bucket list.

GO to the Bonfire Rally- A long standing Cal tradition held in the Greek Theatre and this year will be at 7pm on Friday, the day before the game. This is an ASUC sponsored event that UC Rally Committee plans and executes with the same spirit as when it began. It is truly a spectacle of Cal spirit and will sure to bring a sense of pride and excitement before the game. The event features a history about the Big Game and the Stanford Axe.  If you plan on going, get there early! There is always a large line.  Wear something warm because it is a night event, but if you are close to the flames be prepared to shed some layers.
