10/28/2014

Halloween is just around the corner, and it seems like every other Facebook notification is an event invitation for a costume party. You might love dressing up, but if you’re running seriously low on cash and can’t drop the big bucks on an expensive costume, each invite can be a huge bummer. That’s why Her Campus found 10 fabulous DIY Halloween costumes for collegiettes on a budget made from items you already have in your closet!

1. '80s Workout Girl

You can’t go wrong with a flashy workout costume from the '80s. Halloween costumes can be so itchy and all around uncomfortable, but in colorful gym clothes, you'll definitely be comfortable! If you have any bright-colored spandex items, this is your chance to wear them. If you don’t own anything like that, have no fear! Just slip on some leggings, throw on an off-the-shoulder top, cozy up in some leg warmers or long socks and tie your hair up in a high ponytail, and you’re good to go!

15 Fun & Free Fall Dates

8/31/2014

Classes are back in session, the leaves are about to change color and the weather is getting cooler, but don’t let the autumn chill take the sizzle out of your love life! There are tons of amazing date opportunities for the fall months that won’t break the bank. Her Campus presents 15 fun and free date ideas for fall.

1. Make “His and Hers” Scarecrows

Making scarecrows isn’t just for farmers with a pesky bird problem, it can be a great way to show off your creativity and bond with your guy. First, raid your closets for a scarecrow wardrobe. No plaid? No problem. Any old outfit will do! Once you pick the outfits, stuff the clothes with hay, old newspapers, or leaves until the scarecrows are nice and plump. Then, tie the ends of the sleeves and pant legs with rubber bands or ribbons. Stuff a plastic bag or old pillowcase with leaves for the head and don’t forget to give your scarecrow a face with markers or paint. Add an old hat or some ribbons for hair to complete the dashing duo. Some of our favorite scarecrows were the non-traditional type, like this adorable pair of on a tandem bike. Now you’ll have a perfect scarecrow couple!

2. Bike through the Fall Foliage

Hop on your bikes to enjoy the crisp autumn air, the beautiful foliage and the sound of crunchy leaves beneath your wheels. Not only is riding your bike a great source of exercise, but you’ll both feel more relaxed and at one with nature as well. Whether you bike through a local park or just around campus, you’re sure to enjoy the scenic ride on this great outdoorsy date.

3. Go on a Hayride

Her Story: Community College Changed My Life

12/1/2013

As any recent high school grad can attest, the first question everyone asks when you graduate from high school is, “Where are you going to college?” They ask you knowing that this decision is the first step of the rest of your life. But when I graduated from high school in 2009, I started to dread this question. “I’m going to Burlington County College” (my local community college) seemed to be the magic phrase that would wipe the smile right off their faces. Judging by these reactions, it’s clear that people have a lot of misconceptions about community college. I could practically see the questions forming on their lips:

Aren’t community colleges only for people who couldn’t get into a four-year school?
Not necessarily. Although it is true that community colleges don’t require a minimum GPA or SAT score to attend, community college is a cost-effective and convenient way to earn a degree. In high school, I always got A’s and B’s, took honors and AP courses, and scored well on the SATs. Had I wanted to attend a four-year college right out of high school, my application probably would have been competitive. But when it came time to apply to colleges my junior year of high school, I became overwhelmed with all the options and had a bit of a quarter-life crisis. Even after taking the SATs, researching schools, and visiting countless colleges, I just couldn’t bring myself to apply to anywhere. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to major in and couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars at a 4-year school until I had a plan and knew what I wanted to do. My parents were very supportive of my decision to attend BCC, and I often say it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

The 10 Greatest Fictional Couples & What We Can Learn From Them

9/12/2013

From the hilarious to the heart wrenching, these couples have been through it all. Even though their relationships are fictitious, we can still learn from their mistakes and be inspired by their romance. Let’s take a look at the top 10 fictional couples from our favorite movies, books, and TV shows and assess some of the greatest love stories of our time.

Cinderella and Prince Charming from Cinderella

This classic rags-to-riches tale was probably the first love story you heard as a child. With a little help from her fairy godmother, Cinderella went to the ball and met her handsome prince. It was love at first sight for this royal couple and once the prince found the owner of the tiny glass slipper, they lived happily ever after.

No-Pressure Ways to Make the First Move with Cute Guys on Campus

8/1/2013

One hottie is working up a sweat on the tennis court, another is standing behind you at the salad bar, and it’s definitely more than the Bunsen burner that’s heating up your chemistry lab. Your campus is positively brimming with hot guys! But finding the nerve to actually approach one? That can be more terrifying and uncertain than the current job market. That’s why we’ve chatted it up with relationship experts, real college guys, and the collegiettes who’ve put their good advice to the test, to share with you the ultimate guide to approaching college guys.

Tricks of the Trade

Ask questions

“Think of yourself as one of those female newscasters and just start asking questions,” suggests Dan Lier, author of Men: 10 Secrets Every Woman Should Know from Two Guys That Do (available on askdanandmike.com). “The key to actually getting into a conversation with men is to ask a question about them.”

Lier explains that on an emotional scale, men trail behind their female counterparts, making some college-aged men shallow and self-centered. So channel your inner Katie Couric and start asking him about himself. “Because guys like attention, he’ll think, ‘Wow, she’s really interesting!’ But the fact is, you’re not being interesting, you’re being interested,” explains Lier. “And because you’re being interested, guys will want to be around you.”

Like any good journalist, Kean University student Brigit recommends you ask flirty open-ended questions. “Don’t ask anything that he can answer with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no,’” she explains.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Collegiette Ways

10/2/2012

It seems like a modern-day fairytale. You meet a guy at a party and you spend the entire night talking to him, really hitting it off. He seems super into you and you’re definitely digging him. You exchange numbers and before long, your daily texting leads to late night phone calls and steamy dates. Everything seems to be perfect until one day when everything changes. Suddenly, he seems distant – your texts go unanswered, he’s too busy to hang out, and he gives you one-word responses. What gives? You may have committed a collegiette cardinal sin and now he’s just not that into you. Here are the top 10 ways a collegiette can scare off a guy. Don’t let these happen to you!

1. Gossip His Ear Off

Sure, your best friend might love to gossip about your frenemy from your freshman floor and how she put on a few extra pounds eating cannolis when she studied abroad in Italy over the summer, but your guy won’t appreciate the information. As soon as a girl starts talking about someone behind their back, guys will think she is petty and insecure – a huge turnoff. Next time, save the dirt for your ladies’ wine night and try not to gossip in front of your man.
