Real Live College Guy Joel: Should I Hold Out Hope That I'll Get Back Together with My Ex?5/24/2013 |
Desperately trying to understand the inscrutable mind of the college male? Real Live College Guy Joel (replete with a name way cooler than those of RLCGs Joe and Joey) is here to help you out, call you out, write you a poem to show you’re great and to stop worrying, etc. From major emotional drama to the minutiae of social interaction, use him as your one-stop shop for guy advice. My boyfriend just broke up with me about two days ago. He says he still loves me and wants a relationship with me but right now he is not emotionally healthy enough to love me fully and handle a serious relationship. He says we'll wait and see what happens in a couple of months after he's been abroad and had time to soul search, so perhaps we're on more of a break than actually broken up. I truly believe everything he's told me. We've broken up before and always because of his same problems. Am I being naive for believing he can change and hoping we'll get back together? It's been very difficult for me because we still see each other the same amount as we did when we were dating. And he also tells me we'll stay friends no matter what. I love him immensely and I don’t want to imagine a life without him. I just want to know if I'm being stupid, can a person really love someone and in the process not be able to be with them? Am I being naive? - Confused at Claremont McKenna Confused, |

I'm a senior in college, but I haven't been sexually involved yet, because I simply want a deep loving relationship before going any further, but men seem to be intimidated by my inexperience for some reason. I don't know what to do, so should I tell or not tell about my lack of sexual history in a budding relationship? - Inexperienced at Ithaca Inexperienced, You have made an admirable and mature decision. Plus everyone at Cornell and Ithaca is really attractive and there isn’t much else to do besides work up there, so special kudos. In the environment of most contemporary colleges, the mere prevalence of casual sex pressures many to engage in hook-ups that leave them feeling emotionally unfulfilled. It sounds like you have made a decision that is right for you, and I’m sorry that you feel it has affected how guys treat you. I’m curious as to how guys “seem to be intimidated.” I wonder if some of it is in your head. You’ve made a decision that works for you, but you may feel self-conscious because you worry about being unusual. You also may be volunteering this tidbit about yourself too early. If you’re sharing this on a first date, or even if you’re not dating, a guy is going to be freaked out. |

I've been hooking up with this guy at parties for about a month now—he texts me almost every day, but he hasn't made an effort to see me, except when he's out partying. I like him, but don't want to keep doing this forever if he's not interested in anything more. Should I keep waiting, or call it a lost cause? – Sick of Hooking Up at Syracuse Sick of Hooking Up, You don’t live for drunken hook-ups with bros? Shocking. In all seriousness, I think this illustrates an interesting mindset some girls have in their heads. If a guy just texts you at 2am on Friday night to see what you’re doing, then he must only want to hook up. If a guy texts you daily, and is just curious how you are, then he must genuinely like you as something more. It’s not that simple. Lots of times a guy will genuinely enjoy talking to a girl and still just want to sleep with her. There’s nothing wrong with that, as long as the girl is on the same page. It sounds like this guy hasn’t really been clear with you, and that is what throws you off. |

I was casually dating a guy for a couple weeks before I left to go across the world for the summer. But for my travels we would have been in an official relationship. I really care for him and while I respect that he can't do long distance, I am worried about him forgetting about me while I'm gone. How do I keep in touch without acting like we're in a relationship? - Across the Ocean from Appalachian State Across the Ocean, Well that’s a bummer, but I think you can navigate your way around it. It’s tough to have someone you care about be tens of thousands of miles away, especially when your relationship is in a real gray area. You have to be really careful to not behave as if you and this guy are together. The first thing I think you need is a step back. You were not and are not now in an official relationship. You don’t know for sure that things would have worked out even if you were in the same place. Your language sounds a tad dramatic: “across the world” and “but for my travels” makes this sound like a sweeping romance. I’m not sure the guy would use the same language. I say it’s better to actually forget that you casually dated and view this guy as a crush with whom you want to keep in contact. |

I have been best friends with this guy for two years. Last spring, we started casually making out, but this semester he actually took me out on a couple dates. We have the best time together and there isn't anybody who knows me better. He started to become moody and would be all over me one week and not talking to me the next... and I got confused. I told him he needed to decide whether he would jump in and seriously start dating me or if he was going to step back, but either way he had to decide. He decided not to continue dating me but hasn't said one word since to me since this happened a couple weeks ago. I don't know what his issue is, and even worse than not being able to date him is not being able to talk to my best friend. What do I do? — Former BFF at Barnard Former BFF, |
Real Live College Guy Joel: I Hooked Up With My Guy Friend… Now What?12/16/2012 |
Desperately trying to understand the inscrutable mind of the college male? Real Live College Guy Joel (replete with a name way cooler than those of RLCGs Joe and Joey) is here to help you out, call you out, write you a poem to show you’re great and to stop worrying, etc. From major emotional drama to the minutiae of social interaction, use him as your one-stop shop for guy advice. My best guy friend and I were hanging out one night and he asked “Do you ever wonder what it would be like to hook up?” I said yes and, long story short, we wound up hooking up. I never even realized he saw me that way (honestly, I always thought he only saw me as a bro), but I really liked it. Now I want to continue hooking up and maybe even date him. How should I go about doing that? Things aren’t awkward between us, but it just feels like our hook-up never happened! — Wanting More at Washington State Wanting More, Erm, sounds awkward to me. You haven’t talked about it since it happened? I think it would be best if the pair of you did discuss what happened, but I doubt this will turn into being anything more than friends. Guys are great, they really are. They are capable of all sorts of kindness and wisdom. They also think about having sex with pretty much everyone. So even if he did “see you that way,” it just honestly might not mean much. No matter what people say, there are no set zones when it comes to guys and girls; romantic attraction tinges most friendships to some extent. Also, everyone in college likes to explore, and that’s what this guy probably feels the two of you were doing. |
