10 Things To Do This Summer

4/17/2013

Landing a summer internship can be a real pain in the... well, you know. And what’s more, figuring out all the logistics (like where you’ll live, whether or not you’ll get paid, what the requirements are... and the list goes on) can be more stressful than babysitting five screaming children under the age of four. But before you succumb to a state of panic, remember that just because your weeks are no longer filled with essays and exams, that doesn’t mean they now have to be filled with coffee runs and hours of free labor.

Not really into the whole summer internship scene? No problem. Here’s a list of 10 ways to have a blast this summer, no cubicle required.

Top 5 Study Spots on Campus

Where to get your study on

It’s that time of semester again. Time to forget about all things pertaining to a social life, good eating habits and grooming and instead focus on how to memorize half a semester’s worth of arbitrary information in a 24-hour timespan. That’s right collegiates, midterms are just around the corner, and it’s time to prepare yourselves for the mayhem that is surely to come. Do yourself a favor and stop trying to study in your bedroom, because the first step to success is finding a study environment that’ll keep you productive for hours on end. To help you out, I’ve compiled a list of some study hot spots in Athens that will get you going in the right direction.

Lamar Dodd Art School: Hustling to the Miller Learning Center can be a pain. Instead head on down to the art school for some intense studying. This hidden gem comes equipped with computer labs and comfy chairs. Bonus: Its only a few steps from Ike & Jane in the GMOA!

Two Story Coffeehouse: A quaint study environment located at 5 Points with two available stories (hence the name) of study space. Be prepared to throw down for cup of coffee in case you’re noticed.

Valentine's Day on a Budget

2/7/2013

Love is in the air. Cupid's holiday is fast approaching, and thus it’s about that time to start thinking about what you’ll do for that special someone in your life this year.

For us collegiettes, however, resources may be limited. Maybe your bank account is still recovering from Christmas vacation, or maybe you’ve just been frequenting some of Athens’ finest restaurants a bit too often. But don't fret, because there are plenty of ways to make your guy feel special and appreciated without breaking the bank, or even a Jackson.

So if insufficient funds are plaguing you this time of year, read on, because we’ve got some quick and affordable ways to help you put a smile on your guy’s face this Valentine’s Day. St. Valentine will certainly be proud.

Date ideas!

Dinner and a movie... for a fraction of the price

It's the most classic kind of date night. It starts with a reservation at a fancy restaurant and ends with overpriced popcorn and drinks. You can never go wrong with dinner and a movie, but why not make it happen in the comfort of your own home? Pick up a frozen pizza (I prefer CPK... it’s delicious) and head to the nearest available Redbox for a super cheap alternative to the classic. (Here’s a hint... if you enter the coupon code “DVDONME” when you’re checking out your movie... it’ll be free! Just remember to return it the next day).

Six Tips On Being a Better Student

1/11/2013

The most wonderful time of year has come and gone— much too quickly, I might add . The season of holiday shopping, awesome presents, much-needed relaxation gives way to the new year.

It’s a time for new beginnings and self-improvement; It’s a time to set new goals to ensure that this year is even better than the last.

But along with this fresh set of digits comes something else: something we collegiettes may have overlooked while making our seemingly endless list of New Year’s resolutions: Spring Semester.

A new schedule, new professors, new books, new material, new tests, new stressors.... and it’s all just a few days away. Most of us toss all of this to the back of our minds during Christmas vacation, and it isn’t until the night before class starts that we realize we won’t be spending the upcoming week watching reruns of Gossip Girl on Netflix.

But don’t panic...success is just a few actions away!

So go ahead and make that addendum to your list of resolutions. Dean’s List... here we come!
