The Great Gatsby Pre-Review5/8/2013 |
Who doesn’t love a good movie set in the roaring twenties? A great movie in that category would be The Great Gatsby, which is coming out in its most modern adaptation on May 10th! The most famous version of the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald was the 1974 film by Jack Clayton, starring Robert Redford as Gatsby, Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan, and Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway. This book has created a wide fan base since its first publication in 1925. The plot draws in the reader and makes them emotionally attached to the characters, as any good book does. That is why so many fans today in 2013 are ready for the next movie adaptation starring Leo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Toby Maguire as Nick Caraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. Other cast members include Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Debicki. This star-studded cast is worth all the hype. |
Why The Size of Your Clothes Doesn't Matter5/4/2013 |
How often have you tried on a piece of clothing in a store and it is some ridiculous size number that you never imagined you’d wear? The truth is, with all the thousands of clothing companies out there, you don’t have one true size. With sizes measured in words and numbers like "small," "medium," "large," 0, 8, 26, or 36, these measurements are all subjective. Clothing companies aren’t trying to make women feel bad if they don’t fit into the size six and that’s their size. Women perpetuate the negative connotation with sizes that is seen in the media. There must be a change in how women see their bodies and the clothes they wear. When trying on clothes, focus on the fit instead of the number. It’s like a person's weight on a scale; they shouldn't obsess over the number but judge themselves by how good their body feels. If they don’t feel that great then they know that it may be time to be more health conscious. |
The Pesticides Problem: Not All Fruits & Veggies Are Grown Equally5/3/2013 |
There’s no better feeling than eating health while at school. Grabbing a Chobani between classes or snatching the last few bananas or the rare pomegranates from the dining hall are always great choices. It’s these choices that make independent college life that much harder, considering eating is always a social event. The problem with being away from home is that it is so hard to eat healthy if you’re not always surrounded by great, healthy options. |
California Cool4/10/2013 |
In the celebration of AU’s first warm spring weekend of the year, we witnessed some great first suns-out-guns-out-outfits on campus. Being from NJ, I’ll take any warm weather that I can get in the spring. And the sight of a California girl’s interpretation of the weather made me jump at the opportunity to photograph her. Paris Wood, a freshman in SPA, hails from Cali and gave me a sense of her personal style this weekend. Tastefully bearing skin, she wore a black lace bralette from Pacsun, a floral skirt from Brandy Melville, brown boots from Steve Madden with high socks, sunglasses from Urban Outfitters and to top it off, a purple Zumiez beanie. This look radiated a California cool vibe. It was perfect for frolicking through the nation’s capital for the Cherry Blossoms Festival that day. |
Five Famous Female AU Alums4/8/2013 |
We all know that American University has some pretty famous alumni who have become notable politicians, journalists, performers, scientists, professional athletes, and businessmen and women. One thing that all of these successful people have in common is something with all of us: their alma mater. At one point or another, these people have graced the quad, walked through MGC or the Ward building, ate at TDR, or went to a themed party at a frat. Some of these famous former students associated with AU never graduated, but they still shared some of our similar experiences. As current students, we can look at these success stories and believe that we are capable of going above and beyond with our careers and goals for the future because of what these women have already accomplished. 1. Goldie Hawn is an Academy Award wining actress, director, and producer. She was a successful Emmy-nominated television actress in the 1960’s and then transitioned to film. In 1980 she stared in Private Benjamin and earned and Oscar nomination. She has a few children, one being actress Kate Hudson. She attended American as a drama major but never graduated. She dropped out of school to run her own ballet school until becoming an actress. 2. Giuliana Rancic is a celebrity news personality and co-host on E! News. She started out as a print journalist and is now featured on many television shows on the E! Network. She had a very successful career while she battled breast cancer in 2011. Now she has overcome the cancer and is focusing on her brand and television personality on shows like E!'s Fashion Police. She went to University of Maryland for her undergrad degree and earned her masters at American’s School of Communication (SOC) in ‘97. |
Hesitant About Highlights? Spring Hair Trend4/7/2013 |
Hair is one of our greatest beauty tools. We love to deep condition it, straighten and curl it, braid it, topknot it (is that a verb?), and do just about anything to it to make us feel gorgeous. For the spring, I’ve noticed college girls are lightening their hair to welcome the warmer weather. When I came back to campus after my week of tranquility, also known as spring break, I noticed lightened locks on a sea of girls. Whether it is a touch of ombré at the tips, all over highlights, or a fresh cut, hair is one of the easiest ways to revive your look for a new season. Now I am no hair-dying authority, but I recently tried my hand at getting highlights done. I wasn’t sure what my intention was at first. I didn’t know if I wanted drastic ombré highlights seen here on Khloe Kardashian, or a subtler look seen here on Jessica Biel. |

How to Judge a Guy by His Shoes3/18/2013 |
When you meet a new guy, the first thing you generally look at is there face, their eyes, and probably their smile. After you exchange a few words and break eye contact, you give them a fast body scan. Are they well dressed? Slobby? Somewhere in between? Then your eyes go for his shoes. Is he wearing running sneakers, loafers, or UGG slippers? The thing about guy’s shoes is that they say a lot about their personal style. A guy’s shoes can tell you if he takes pride in the little things, because guys don’t have many other accessories to shop for. Some guys treat their shoes like a girl would treat her favorite purse; no scuffs in sight and they’re always crisp and clean. A guy who keeps his shoes super clean means that he most likely will take good care of you because he takes care of his own possessions and home. A guy with messy, old shoes may not always put you first if he doesn’t keep up with his own needs (i.e. a new pair of shoes every so often). Is there a correlation between guy’s shoes and their personality? This isn’t a foolproof method of finding your ideal guy, but take a look at their shoes and see if these descriptions below help you understand him more. 1. Expensive running sneakers: This means that fitness if a priority and he may have some extra spending money (because of a job) lying around to spend on you. He is definitely an athlete and a good training buddy. He might be a little competitive with you, but what guy isn’t? |
How to Slim Down Your Starbucks Order2/19/2013 |
When you order your go-to drink at Starbucks, do you ever think about what goes into that latte or frap? You don’t have to drink the exact milk, syrup and topping combination that is standard of Starbucks drinks. Your daily or weekly Starbucks consumption doesn’t have to be considered an indulgence. There are simple ways to order your drink with fewer calories, less fat, and less worry. Here are some terms and tips to use when ordering your drink to perfection, just the way you want it. Go for the ‘Skinny’ version: this means non-fat milk and sugar-free syrup. Switching from whole milk to non-fat milk can save you 60-110 calories. Order a ‘Double’: this gives you an extra shot of caffeine for a jolt of energy. Extra caffeine can quicken your metabolism and relieve aches in muscles; but too much can make you shaky and wired. Try Sugar-Free: this is syrup without refined white sugar. Your drink might taste a little bland so you can add Sugar in the Raw (20 calories) (Splenda is white refined sugar and much sweeter than actual sugar). No whip: this means no whipped cream and saves you 110-140 calories and 13 grams of fat. Stick to the basics: don’t get fancy, for example, stick with the original mocha over a white chocolate mocha and it will save you 140 calories. Our drink of choice: Skinny Vanilla Latte, (hot and iced) saves you 60 calories over a regular vanilla latte. |
