UMass Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient: Peter Trovato '053/22/2011 |
It’s no wonder that Peter Trovato received the UMass Amherst Distinguished Alumni Award. He was a triple threat throughout his undergraduate career with academic, athletic, and professional success. He double majored in journalism and political science, graduated from Commonwealth Honors College, was captain of the UMass Men’s Varsity Ice Hockey Team, and interned at the Massachusetts State House. In November of 2004, he founded the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, which guarantees $40,000 towards college tuition to the children of fallen Massachusetts Service members. Trovato is working towards receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School, and took time between classes to speak with Her Campus UMass about why he created the fund and who is eligible to receive the honor.

If you’re a first-timer, you might be wondering how you can come home with a large bead collection even during a short visit and what the famous Louisiana foods are.

UMass Grad & Peace Corps Volunteer - Emily Grund3/3/2011 |
After high school, Rockport, MA native Emily Grund decided to take a gap year. During the year she lived in Thailand with a host family and taught English from September to December and then interned at a New Zealand community newspaper from January to April, which sparked an interest in journalism. Emily knew that wasn’t going to be the last of her traveling or journalism escapades, and she was right.
Emily enrolled at UMass Amherst in the fall of 2006 to study journalism and came out the other end with a bang. The university selected her as the class of 2010 co-commencement speaker--the third consecutive journalism major chosen. Just three months after graduation, she began her 27 month-long United States Peace Corps journey. Emily now teaches English in a farming community in Zaragoza, Philippines, which has about 40,000 residents. |
Daniel Stewart '12 designs UMass app for iPhone2/17/2011 |
Junior Daniel Stewart, with assistance from junior Stephanie Cheung, designed the free UMass iPhone application in the summer of 2010 primarily for new students to navigate through campus and learn the history of the academic buildings.
The application provides point-to-point directions to 130 campus buildings, over 85 images, and links to the UMass homepage, SPIRE, SPARK, athletics, Dining Services, transit schedules, and other campus-related sites. The university released an advertisement looking for someone to create the application, and Stewart responded. This allowed UMass to compete with other universities who had a similar application. |
Valentine's Day Cards2/14/2011 |
Have you ever wondered who created the $3 thick pieces of paper with pictures and romantic words that drug stores designate an entire aisle to? Five College Consortium’s own Ester Howland (1828-1904), often referred to as “The Mother of the American Valentines”, created and popularized Valentine’s Day greeting cards in America in the 1840s. She graduated from Mount Holyoke Seminary, now Mount Holyoke College, in 1847.
Howland received a Valentine from an English friend, which inspired her to design her own. She appointed several girls to help her produce them in her home, and later established the New England Valentine Company, says a Michigan State University library source. The source also states, “Around 1880, when her father took ill, she sold her business to George C. Whitney, who expanded it into a greeting card empire.” |
