Lose the Freshman 15: Setting Summer Goals

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

Due to my decision this weekend to let go a little with my diet while on vacation at home with my family and friends, I was certainly hesitant to weigh myself today.

bdd0bbc9But, I am here to report that I didn’t gain a single pound this week. On the contrary, I actually weighed in yet again at 144 pounds. And I am very, very happy about that.

This week’s weigh in proved to me that I can loosen up on my diet a little here and there, but still maintain my weight loss. And do you want to know what I attribute my success to this week?

Exercise.

I said that I was going to do it, and I did. I ran 2 and a half miles Easter morning (before, of course, I came home and ate my little heart out while surrounded by my wonderful family), I ran 5 miles yesterday morning and I ran another 3 this morning.

So I was able to balance out the extra calories I ate with a little sweat shed and a few hours running around Santa Barbara. And clearly it worked, since I didn’t gain any weight this week.

But now that I’m nearing the end of this wonderful journey, I’m looking forward to the future and the time I’ll have this summer to continue working on myself and improving my body.

I’ve got a long summer (nearly four months! Yes, it’s great to be in college) ahead of me, and plenty of time to devote to losing more weight and working out every day.

So, I decided to set some summer goals to get me motivated to kick this summer off the right way, and I suggest you do the same if you’re looking to get in shape this summer season!

18f19ef8My Summer Goals:

  1. Lose 5 More Pounds: I promise, just five more. Getting out of the 140 range and into the 130 range will help me with my BMI number, and I also just want to lose a little bit more weight. But that’s it.
  2. Work Out Every Day: Yes, every day. If I want to keep up my weight loss and lose even a little bit more weight, I’m going to have to continue exercising every day. And even though Florida humidity is killer in the summer, I’m prepared to brave the heat to get my fitness on every day.
  3. Continue Following the Jumpstart Diet: I’m not prepared to stop with my diet. It’s taught me the importance of eating right and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and I’m fully planning on continuing that this summer.
  4. Tone Up: I may have lost 15 pounds so far, but I’ve got a long way to go until my stomach and abs are fully toned. I’d like to get my stomach flatter, and the only way to do that is to continue doing abs workouts. So this summer, my abs are getting made over.
  5. Don’t Put Weight Back On: This is the most important goal I’m setting this summer! Above everything else, even if I don’t lose 5 more pounds, I will not let myself put that weight back on. I refuse.

So all in all, even though I only technically have a week left on my journey towards losing the “freshman 15,” I’m looking forward to four more months of devotion to exercise and nutrition. I’ve found a whole new me this semester, and I’m ready to tan her, tone her and get her even hotter this summer.

Sara Kaner was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California and first fell in love with journalism as a freshman in high school thanks to her wonderful Intro to Journalism teacher. A family move brought her to Fort Myers, Florida the summer after her freshman year of high school, but she continued to pursue an interest in journalism. She is in her second year at the University of Florida and is pursuing a dual degree in Public Relations and Psychology. She is heavily involved on the UF campus and dedicates most of her time to her various organizations and to her friends. She loves people, magazines, sports and social media, and she hopes to combine all three in her job someday. For now, she aspires to attend Law School and specialize in Media Law. She secretly aspires to be Chelsea Handler, but she's happy being herself for the moment, just as long as she can lose the freshman 15 this semester.
