I’m about to face some serious temptation.
With the weekend in full swing and my spring break just beginning, I’m leaving behind the comfort of my food-controllable environment in Gainesville, Florida to venture to my best friend’s house in Fort Myers, Florida and then onward to cruise to the Bahamas.
Needless to say, I’m scared. Really scared.
I’ve never been on a cruise before, but I all I hear is that that the food is delicious. That’s what scares me most.
I booked this cruise nearly two months ago, when weightloss was just another thought clouding the back of my mind. But now that I’m jumpstarting my life for good, this diet won’t stop just because I’m out of the country and on a ship.
So I’ve got to do my best to resist the temptation that will surely be there. Temptation in the form of unlimited cheeseburgers, french fries, pizza and soft-serve ice cream. But I’m confident in my ability to enjoy myself and still eat wel, all while sticking to my diet.
I’ve set out a few simple rules for myself to help me through this week:
- Seek out fresh foods: I’ve been told that cruise ships place out tons of fresh fruits and vegetables, and they also have a salad bar. These are my best bet to sticking to my diet this week. And, fruits and vegetables are yummy, so I won’t feel bad about eating them while on the cruise.
-
Avoid empty calories: If I’m going to splurge for a night on the cruise, I want to make sure that I do it the right way. I don’t want to waste calories on french fries or pizza, because those foods will go straight to my belly (and my belly is something I want to look as best as it can while I’m out in sun in a bikini all day)

- Work out: It’s going to be a challenge, but I’ve got to make myself get SOME physical activity every day. I know the cruise ship will have a fitness room, so I may have to sacrifice an hour of sleep to get up early and get myself to the gym. Working out will be my best bet to stay on track with my diet while I’m away, and the only way to maintain my weight during the next four days.Â
- Pick one night to splurge: As with any diet, it’s okay to take a night off and just enjoy myself. I’m not talking about eating serious carbs or highly fattening food, but I think I’ll be okay if I take one night off to enjoy a place of pasta and a small cup of ice cream.
- Enjoy myself: I want to make this a week to fully enjoy myself and my time with my best friends. Yes, I’m going to watch what I eat. And yes, I’m going to work out. But at the end of the day, I want to take advantage of this opportunity I’ve been given and make the best of it, which means I can’t get down on myself if I have a bad week. Because it happens to the best of us.
But before I can enjoy my four blissful days on the cruise, I’ve got to get through one small hurdle…running my first half marathon! That just so happens to be tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. I promise to let you all know how it goes, but if you have any words of advice or encouragement to help me get through the race and the run, please send them my way!
