There’s nothing I love more than a visit from my dear old mom and dad, especially when they love on me and take me grocery shopping while they’re here. And considering the diet that I’m following right now, I’ll take all the free groceries I can get!
My wonderful parents are deserting me on this side of the country to move approximately 3,000 miles away and back to Santa Barbara, California, which is where I’m originally from. Thankfully, they stopped for the night in Gainesville on their way out west.
I definitely loved getting to spend some quality time with my parents and my basset hound, Buster, but I can’t lie, I also REALLY loved getting free groceries and a free meal. I can always count on my parents to spoil me whenever they see me. But hey, I deserve it! Right?Â
Anyways, I was super hesitant about buying too many items at the store this week, because my spring break starts this Friday and I won’t be in my apartment for at least a week. I didn’t want to buy all this yummy food and then have it go bad last week, so I just stocked up on the essentials, including: bananas, peaches, apples, avocados, low-fat sliced cheese, fat-free milk, skinless/boneless chicken breast, frozen vegetables, olive oil, and two boxes of cereal.Â
I guess I know that if all else fails this week and I can’t find the time to cook dinner, I’ll be able to eat some fruit and a good old bowl of cereal. It may not be fancy, but it’s healthy. And that’s all that matters to me.Â
A fully stocked fridge is always a perk to having my parents in town, but I faced one minor setback tonight: my first night eating out since starting the SELF Jumpstart Diet.
My parents got into town around 6 p.m., so there wasn’t really option to cook dinner at home, considering time constraints and the fact that I had homework to tackle later on. Instead, we settled on grabbing takeout from Chili’s. Seeing hamburgers and french fries in the flesh for the first time in two weeks was definitely tempting, and I caught myself eyeing the fattening foods for a second too long.
Needless to say, it was a challenge for me to find something acceptable to eat on the menu.
Luckily, Chili’s offers Guiltless Grill options for those of us that are monitoring our diet. I settled on the Santa Fe Chicken Wrap with low-fat Ranch dressing and steamed veggies. The meal itself had 630 calories and 23 grams of fat, which is probably more grams of fat than I’ve eaten in one meal in a long, long time. But considering it was probably one of the healthiest options on the menu, I’d have to say that the dish was suprisingly delicious.
I would definitely get it again if I had to eat at Chili’s, and I would highly recommend it to my fellow dieters out there!
Tonight proved to me that temptation is all around me, and it’s always going to be around me. I can’t rid the world of french fries and candy bars as I work toward losing my “fresman 15,” but I can seek healthy alternatives. And I’ve discovered that healthy options are really out there, I just have to make a conscious effort to seek out those healthy options in order to stay on track with my diet and my weight loss goals.
It’ll take willpower, but it’s definitely doable.Â
