Lose the Freshman 15: Choosing Healthy Sushi

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

Hey collegiettes™!

So, this weekend I decided to give myself a break from the Jump Start Diet meals that I have everyday and try something different, but still going for healthy choices that would keep me under my proper calorie intake.

My exercise for the day was making my way around the mall with my friend Annie. Hey, all that walking has got to count for something, right?  Though certainly not the most intense of my workout routines so far, losing all my money in all the stores hopefully meant losing a few calories as well. 77d8504e

For lunch, we met up with our dates at a sushi restaurant where we each ordered one roll for ourselves. Now, I’ve never had a whole roll, I have had a few here and there because there’s seriously always sushi at my house–my parents love it.

Looking at my yum-a-dub sushi roll, I wouldn’t expect many calories because… well, look at it! However, according to CalorieKing.com, one California Roll is 365 cal. which is good because I needed to stay under my 450. cal. lunch limit.

So, with the little bit of research I could do on my iPhone on the way to the restaurant, I also kept in mind a few things I learned from SELF.

When eating sushi, choose…

  1. … a salmon roll because it’s “rich in heart-protecting omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury.”
  2. … sushi wrapped in seaweed as your source of vitamin C.
  3. … brown rice, because it has triple the amount of fiber compared to white rice.
  4. … eating with ginger because it “may help prompt ovarian cancer cells to self-destruct.”
  5. … a side of wasabi because it contains chemicals germs that cause tooth decay.

I was looking for one that came with brown rice, but the menu at the sushi restaurant confused me and I just gave up! Fail.
