Would you Wear a Royal Wedding Knock-off?

(Source)

When the royal wedding aired to over 2 billion viewers worldwide, there were souvenirs galore: knock-off royal engagement rings, tea bags, t-shirts, commemorative china, and even “Kiss Me Kate” beer. And in the days after the royal wedding, designers quickly went to work to re-create the royal bride Kate Middleton’s stunning Alexander McQueen wedding gown and maid of honor Pippa Middleton’s equally stunning ivory gown. These dresses inspired mass-produced knock-off in stores as early as a month after Will and Kate exchanged nuptials and it seems like the royal wedding hype hasn’t died down in the fashion world, because the knock-offs keep coming.

It might have been Kate’s special day, but it was the bridesmaid who stole the spotlight. Pippa wowed the crowd with her form-fitting, ivory satin-based crepe gown. With a cowl front and 58 gazar and organza covered buttons, it was closely akin to her sister’s dress. Just recently, Pippa’s dress was replicated by London department store Debenhams and it’s hitting stores Oct. 17.

Debenhams, $250

For those of us who can’t shell out $39,000 for the gown Pippa wore at the royal wedding, Debenham’s version for $250 isn’t a bad alternate.

“Both men and women everywhere were instantly talking about Pippa, so naturally brides-to-be will want to emulate her classic look – both for themselves or their bridesmaids,” said Alaid Mehada, Chief Personal Shopper at Debenham’s Oxford Street. “We have been inundated by customers asking if we have anything similar to the dresses worn by Kate, Pippa and the flower girls, but the ivory dress worn by Pippa is the most requested by far.”

And American knock-offs have been spotted all over from Lord and Taylor to ShopBop and Lauren by Ralph Lauren. But are these royal-inspired knock-offs elegant and trendy or cheapened by the fact that they are such a blatant copy of the original? Are designers reaping the benefits from the creations of the real designers? Would you wear a Pippa knock-off dress at your sister’s wedding or even a Kate knock-off gown at your own?
