Step into Summer: The 5 Essential Shoes

One of my favorite things about summer is the plethora of new shoe options that suddenly appear. Gone are the knee-high, leather boots of winter and the standard ballet flats of spring. Now it’s time for the open-toed, brightly colored, strappy wonders that are summer shoes. Here are the cutest shoe trends to try this season and how to make them work in your wardrobe.

For a date try…
A Novelty Espadrille

For most collegiettes™ “perfect summer shoe” and “espadrille” are synonymous (and if they’re not, they should be!). These effortlessly chic yet timeless shoes are a must have this summer (and many summers to come). Possibly my favorite thing about the espadrille is that they come in just about every style–wedges or flats, casual or formal, patterns or solid colors. For the ever indecisive shoe shopper (like me) you can’t go wrong with a classic espadrille. Try the adorable NAPAby Steve Madden or the KG Pablo Espadrille Mid Wedge Shoesfrom Asos.com.

For your summer internship try…
Nude Pumps

If you’re looking to impress your supervisor (or just want to look especially fabulous), I have two words for you: nude pumps. This summer’s blush and nude colored pumps prove to be more summery than basic black, but still perfectly professional for the office. (Bonus: shades similar to your skin tone will elongate your legs instantly!). Try Unitty by Steve Maddenor Jessica by Jessica Simpsonfrom PiperLime.com.

For a day of shopping try…
Minimalist sandals

For your ultimate day-out-with-the-girls shoe think minimalist design meets bold colors and dazzling details. This summer’s sandals are taking a turn away from last year’s over-the-top gladiators towards modest designs… with a twist. Picking a simple sandal in a bright color is a chic, tasteful way of pulling off this season’s neon trend! Try the B.P. Valentine Sandalfrom Nordstrom or the Razzleby Steve Madden.

For going out on the weekends try…
70s Inspired Platforms

Next time you go out, try channeling your inner flower-child in a pair of 70s inspired platforms. Pay special attention to details like wide straps, ankle straps, deep chocolate brown leather, floral patterns, and (perhaps most importantly) studded wooden platforms. For the budget conscious collegiette™, try the Ankle-strap platformsfrom the Gap, and if you’re looking to splurge a little, consider the Forget Me Not Platformby Free People.

For a day at the beach try…
Havaianas

Havaianas are the be all and end all of flip-flops. There is no better shoe for the perfect summer day lounging on the beach or by the pool with your besties. Available in a multitude of colors, patterns, and styles, even the pickiest collegiettes™ are sure to find a pair to fall in love with (Havaianas even offers a Design-Your-Ownoption starting at only $25!). But be warned: buy one pair, and you’ll be hooked for life. Try the Slim Crystal Flower flip-flopor the Spirit flip-flop, both from Havaianas.com
