This past weekend I took my little sister shopping for accessories for her prom. We had found her a gorgeous dress a few weeks back and in exchange for purchasing the gown at this boutique in our town we each received awesome one-time-use discount coupons (40% off!) to use at the shop which has a fantastic collection of shoes, bags, jewelry and both day and night clothes.
My sister found a pair of silver heels that would look great with her slinky blue gown along with a great pair of earrings. We were so glad because we were really worried she’d have to find something at another store and she wouldn’t get to use her discount, since it was about to expire!
While we waited in line I picked up a pair of jeans that I didn’t really need, but figured it was worth it if I could get 40% off the cost. While my sister, Devon, paid for her items, I was eavesdropping on the mother-daughter duo behind me debating between two prom dresses. I got the gist of the conversation — the gorgeous gold dress was twice the price of the standard pink prom dress and the mom was trying to convince her daughter to go with the pink to save their family money (it sounded like they were going through a tough time financially from what I could gather).
I looked down at my jeans and realized I could do without them. I awkwardly turned around, put the jeans down on a random table and approached the mother and her daughter.
“Hey,” I said timidly. “I have this coupon for 40% off and it expires pretty soon and I’m not going to use it,” I explained as I pulled the coupon out of my pocket. “Do you want it?”
“Are you serious?” the girl asked me as her mom said, “Are you sure?”
“Yes, really take it,” I said as I handed it to them.
“Thank you so much!!” The girl shrieked. “Mom we can get the gold dress now right?”
“Yes,” her mom said slowly. “We got lucky,” she said as I turned my back.
I felt really good when I left the store. I didn’t need yet another pair of jeans and it made me feel way better to help out that girl who was shopping for her first prom (clearly I learned a lot while eavesdropping)!
