TV and film’s biggest stars returned to the red carpet on Jan. 10 at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards. The highlight of the evening? The glamour, of course! Surrounded by nominees dressed in flashy sequins and eye-catching nudes, mega-stars Selena Gomez and Rihanna stood out from the crowd by rocking one of winter’s hottest trends — lush velvet.
Due to the fabrics’ high-priced cost of production and thicker feel, velvet is usually synonymous with only the most special occasions. But the lustrous material is having its moment in 2023. Velvet clothing is perfect for winter because of its ability to keep you warm and looking elegant. Gomez, who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical for her role as Mabel Mora in the hit comedy series Only Murders In The Building, (her first ever Golden Globe nomination!) wore a stunning velvet Valentino Haute Couture gown paired with draping plum purple sleeves and diamond accessories, and it’s easily one of my favorite looks from the star to date (my Wizards of Waverly Place heart was absolutely screaming for her). The wine-colored dress was made complete with matching eyeshadow, flushed cheeks, a simple nude lip, and a sleek ponytail. Oh, and don’t forget the classic four-inch platforms to go with it. It’s official — I’m obsessed.
Rihanna, on the other hand, who was nominated for best original song for “Lift Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, skipped out on the Golden Globes red carpet, but was spotted inside the ceremony donned in a dazzling Schiaparelli gown beside her boyfriend, A$AP Rocky. Never one to shy away from fashion risks, Rihanna shined wearing a black, off-the-shoulder velvet bustier dress paired with dramatic velvet gloves and a voluminous velvet cape and puff sleeves (a true ball-gown moment, ladies and gentlemen). Her stunning look was pulled together with all the Cartier diamonds, including a pair of drop earrings and an oversized diamond pendant, as well as a pair of gorgeous Giuseppe Zanotti heels. In terms of her makeup for the big night, the star wore a full face of Fenty Beauty (naturally), rocking a glowy face and rose gold hues.
