Rompers: The Perfect Summer Outfit?

Rompers.
They seem to be this summer’s essential piece. You can’t walk around a city or browse the daily streetstyle blogs without seeing someone in one. Yes, the may be a simple go-to outfit when picking out clothes in the morning but are they really all that great?

My answer to that question is no, but I think I’m a little biased. I have never found a romper I liked. Generally, the proportions look all wrong on my body type and they never seem to be flattering. My friend and I even made it our mission on one past shopping trip to find the ever-elusive (at least in my case) perfect romper. No luck. No success. No romper.

That doesn’t mean I’ve never seen someone who looks good in a romper. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Just recently, while browsing my Tumblr dashboard I came across a picture of model Karlie Kloss making her way in between runway shows clad in the most adorable drawstring romper and wore-in boots.

The key to wearing a romper and making sure the silhouette is something flattering is to either belt it at the waist (a la the $59.00 romper from Urban Outfitters shown here) or make sure it’s cinched for something more form fitting (example: the $56.00 polka-dotted “playsuit” from Topshop). With a romper, it is easy to lose a sense of the body’s curves since it is all just one continuous piece of fabric. Also, after hitting the gym all of spring semester and getting that perfect bikini body, why would you want to cover it up by wearing something with no shape or form?

Although this particular piece of clothing doesn’t seem to be my thing, it doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be a collegiette™ staple. Rompers are an easy layering piece and comfortable even in the most extreme heat of the summer. Check out websites like Urban Outfitters, Topshop, and Forever 21 for more options.
