Is It Worth it? The HC Editors Try Out Head to Toe Neutrals, AKA The Trend That’s Taking Over Spring

Ok, so you might be wondering: where do all of our trending spring staple wardrobe pieces we’ve been obsessing over on Instagram come from? The runway, of course! Runway trends can come off as unattainable and unwearable, but some of the more timeless ones can be all worth it when styled correctly. Many people watch runway shows (Gucci, in particular) and get whisked into this fantasy world where the clothes individually are the least of your worries.  Brands have been notorious for just throwing questionable garments on top of each other and sending it down the runway, but it’s all at a price for the ambiance of the show.

So what happens afterward, and where do these trends go? Slowly, they trickle down to stores like Forever 21 and H&M, but many can be seen as daunting because of how they look people see them on the models strutting their stuff during the shows. It can seem tough to make such an abstract look come to life, but taking inspiration from the runway for your everyday wear is actually super simple. This month I decided to take this exact challenge upon myself and encourage everyday women just like me to add a little bit of runway inspo into their lives to see if these trends are really worth the hype.

However, I couldn’t do this all by myself. To prove just how wearable (or unwearable) these trends are I wanted to reach out to more individuals and really put this challenge to the test.  What better place to do this than the Her Campus Media office?! I asked Felicity (HC’s Style Editor) Gina (HC’s Beauty Editor) and Edel (HC’s Video Content Creator) again to decide: is this a trend that actually works in an office setting?

The entire runway season there were pops of bright colors, but something I also noticed was how neutral and simple many of the pieces actually were.  Head to toe neutrals can sound basic and boring, but when sent down the runway, they actually looked pretty chic. The neutrals make this season feel fresh and brand new, just how Spring should feel! Two brands that really stood out with these head to toe neutral looks were Burberry and Max Mara.

So how did the HC editors take on this challenge? Let’s take a look!

Dipping into neutrals

Felicity started us off with a look that’s SUPER attainable and easy to wear!  Her teddy coat jacket is the perfect neutral to break up an all black and denim look.  Want to add another element to jazz it up? The Western style has also been huge and Felicity shows it off with her western buckle belt.

“So basically my entire closet is filled with neutrals, so this was a very easy challenge for me,” Felicity said.  “However, I like to air on the side of going more light on the neutrals so I pulled out one of my favorite tan jackets, a black turtleneck that I wear literally every day, and just pairing it with some other black accents as well.”

White out

Gina went a little bit more daring by going for an all-white look with some tan accessories to match.  She looks so powerful and chic in the head to toe white, and it’s the perfect Spring look!

Gina said, “My go to neutral is kind of like an all white power outfit.  It makes me feel really clean and fancy. Then, I like to accent with some bronze notes like this burnt orange headband and a brown woven shoe.”

Head-to-toe shades

Looking to be really daring with your look? Edel took us to the next level by incorporating a different shade of neutral in each aspect of her look, even down to the nails and makeup.  The different tones really add depth to the look and I think she killed this! It’s not only perfect to wear in the office, but also out with friends.

“What I love about neutrals is that there are so many shades that you can put on of different neutrals and when you put them together they make your style look so chic and very put together!” Edel said.

So, let’s recap: head to toe neutrals might be one of those timeless trends that can actually be wearable in day to day life.  No matter how you wear it, it makes you look clean, put together, and totally chic!  Depending on your comfort level, there are so many different routes you could go with this.  If you’re looking to just dabble in the realm of neutrals, then just a basic nude or tan coat is the perfect way to go. Wearing an all-white look with some neutral accessories can be a more daring execution and a total power look. If you’re looking to elevate your look (next Instagram OOTD WHO?!) try to go bold and throw on different shades to add depth and look super put together. Final thoughts?  Time to stock up on your neutrals for the Spring because I’m thinking this trend is definitely worth it and here to stay!
