When I was a little girl, I had the most beautiful hair. My curls were bouncy and shiny, never frizzy, and streaked with natural golden highlights. But as I got older, my perfect curls turned into messy waves that rarely seem to dry quite right. In middle school, I bought my trusty hair straightener, and have relied on straightening my hair nearly daily since then. After years of use, my straightener is on its last legs, so I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to try out the InStyler®.
The InStyler® is a rotating, heated hair appliance that can be used to straighten, curl, or style. Unlike your typical hair appliance, it has a rotating barrel that glides down your hair as you style, while gently brushing your hair to smooth it at the same time.
I used the InStyler® to straighten my hair, and I was pleased with the results. My hair felt softer and smoother than it usually does, and the precision of the tool accentuated my layered cut. Instead of the usual ten minutes it takes to straighten my hair, I was able to finish styling my hair in nearly half that time. The tool is so effective that I only needed to glide it through each section of hair once. (However, I noticed that the slower I styled each section, the better my results were.) I also liked that it brushed my hair simultaneously, which eliminated the annoying issue of switching back and forth between brushing out a section of hair and then straightening it, like I have to do with a traditional flat-iron.
While I enjoyed the InStyler®, I wasn’t entirely happy with my experience. When the iron is clamped together, it creates a buzzing, whirring sound. (If your roommate is a light sleeper, this is not the tool for you!) I also found it difficult to hold. The first time I used it, I burnt the tip of my finger and my scalp, even though I had the plastic safeguard covering the rotating barrel. The plastic safeguard only protects you from half the barrel, so it’s easy to accidentally touch the hot part of the iron. Use the InStyler® with caution!
