The infamous Cannes Film Festival took place this May, a time for the top film industry professionals to showcase their work and view the top films of the year. However, for us “normal people,” the real treat of Cannes is the red carpets, from Elsa Hosk in Viktor and Rolf’s new haute couture collection and Claire Holt’s pregnancy reveal in a gorgeous halter Lanvin gown to Jennifer Lawrence in… flip-flops (yes, you read that right).
On Monday, May 22, Lawrence stepped out on the red carpet in a beautiful cardinal red gown with a straight neckline, thin straps, full skirt, and matching shawl from Christian Dior Couture. Paired with a Dior diamond necklace and a pale red lip, Lawrence looked nothing shy of breathtakingly elegant. However, when holding up her dress as she descended the stairs of the red carpet, she revealed to be sporting a pair of chunky black flip-flops underneath her gown. To say this shocked fashion professionals all over the world is an understatement. Is J. Law about to start a new trend just in time for summer — black tie meets backyard? She did have her toes painted red, though, to match (Is she trying out the red nail theory?), which makes me wonder if these flops were meant to be shown off or kept secret.
Either way, flip-flops are the summer shoe, according to Lawrence and her stylists, so here’s how you channel your inner J. Law and confidently rock flip-flops beyond the beach all summer long.
- Flip Flops with jeans & a tee
-
Keep a casual outfit casual with an easy flip-flop as a shoe choice. Whether you’re going to the grocery store or having a casual lunch with a friend, try pairing your baggy jeans with a basic white T-shirt, a pair of flip-flops, and obviously, matching accessories.
- Flip Flops & A Sundress
-
Perfect for those HOT summer days, try pairing your favorite flowy sundress with a pair of flip-flops. Not only will this open-toed shoe help with the heat, but you will look so effortlessly stylish.
- Flip Flops with athleisure
-
For an easy throw-on outfit on an errand-running day, try pairing your favorite athleisure pieces with a good pair of flip-flops. Whether this be a tennis dress, workout set, or light pair of sweats, flip-flops should be your summer shoe to pair with it all.
- Flip Flops & parachute Pants
-
If you want a comfy outfit for a night out, then parachute pants are the way to go. Not only are they light and feel like nothing, they look fantastic with flip-flops.
- Flip FLops & Jean Shorts
-
Jean shorts are a summer staple, so this list would not be complete without including them. One of my favorite ways to style jean shorts is to dress them up. Try styling your favorite pair with a basic tank, oversized blazer, and a fancy flip-flop with some metal detailing.
