How To Get Abstract Metallic Nails As Your Next Mani

Chrome nails are by no means going away, but they did just get one heck of a makeover. Now, instead of simply finishing your minimalist manicure with a few swipes of chrome powder, maximalist metallic has become the main event. This trend has quickly become celebrity approved too, with stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Sydney Sweeney, Peyton List, and Joey King all showing off their new and super shiny sets.

Familiar with Hailey Bieber’s glazed doughnut nails? Well, this new trend actually comes from the same celebrity nail artist, Zola Ganzorigt. She’s still using her signature chrome powder, sparkles, and shine, but these days Ganzorigt is favoring abstract, more embellished nail designs. Now that her celebrity clientele is favoring abstract metallic too, it’s time to learn how you can get in on the trend.

What to ask for at the salon

So, how do you get the abstract metallic look? It all starts with finding the abstract nail inspiration of your dreams. A good rule of thumb (pun very much intended) is to head to IG for photo inspo and TikTok for tutorials to see how the trend is being brought to life in the salon or at home.

If you’re going into the salon to see a trusted nail tech, you’ll just want to make sure that you explain exactly what you want. It can be especially helpful to provide clear examples or the inspiration behind your design. It’s just as important to be kind and patient with whoever’s doing your nails, too! These designs often take extra time, effort, and precision, so communicating kindly and effectively will help in avoiding any “This is what I wanted… the pastels… and this… is what I got!” horror scenarios. Pro tip: Before going to the salon, call ahead of time and ask your tech if they have chrome dust, nail gems, and glitter in stock to make sure they can do the look you’re going for.

How to get the look at home

One of the best things about this less-conventional nail look is that it’s easy for anyone to achieve! There’s no one rule or one-style-fits-all that makes or breaks the trend. That means if you’re into lots of squiggles, draw those crazy lines on! If dots are more your speed, go for those instead (or both — sky’s the limit here, bestie!). If you like the retro, square-patterned look, that’s something you can design on your nails, too. Pick out nail polish colors that feel the most you and just have fun with it! The point is, abstract nails make for some of the most attainable manicure ideas. As a result, TikTok is teeming with trendy tutorials that’ll have your nails looking like the celebs’ in no time.

If you’re ever in a pinch — or maybe you’re just like me and feel you don’t possess the time, patience, or artistic talent needed to create the abstract nails of your dreams — you can always pick up some press-on nails! There’s so many new and popular brands, like Glamnetic, Static Nails, Chillhouse, Paint Lab, and more. They can be found just about anywhere now, and there’s so many new hacks to help with gel curing press-ons to ensure they stay on longer. Plus, the artwork that can be displayed on press-on nails (since it doesn’t necessarily involve painting on a moving surface) is always absolutely gorgeous. Pinterest is a great place to browse for ideas, in case you’re looking for a place to start.

Need more inspo? Try the Glamnetic Stardust Medium Pointed Almond Nails ($15) and draw some abstract lines on top with colorful nail polish and a nail brush, or snag the Static Nails Rose Gold French Velvet Effect Almond Reusable Pop-on Manicures ($24) and add on some fun nail gems for a total Euphoria moment. Want an ultra-metallic, silvery look? Check out the OPI xPress/On Special Effect Press On Nails ($14), or if you want a pop of color, try the Static Nails Meet Me At Sunrise Almond Reusable Pop-on Manicures ($22). (If you like long-lasting gel nails, you can also buy a gel curing light.)

If you’re looking to get in on all the new nail trends this fall, now’s the time to start exploring! Find what inspires you and don’t be afraid to bring it to life in whatever way works best for you. Abstract metallic may be the move of the moment, but the trends are always changing. So, what are you waiting for? Go get your glam on — I can’t wait to see your masterpieces.
