How to Survive an Ugly Holiday Sweater Party

Now that Thanksgiving is over- I’m still digesting my turkey feast- it’s time to focus on the upcoming winter holidays! Regardless of the holiday, there are so many fun festivities this season. Some events, however, can cramp our style. Case in point: ugly holiday sweater parties.  I feel your pain, fashionistas: these sweaters are super cheesy. Though their origin is unknown, it seems like ugly holiday sweaters are (unfortunately) here to stay. How can we survive one of these parties without losing our fashionable identities? Don’t worry, collegiettes™, we’re sharing the secrets to surviving an ugly holiday sweater party. You’re welcome!

Don’t Underestimate the Power of  Hair and Makeup

Just because you’re wearing a crazy sweater doesn’t mean you have to have lousy hair and makeup!  In terms of makeup, it’s all about the eyes: a smokey eye or a winged liner will give this sweater situation a sultry spin. While I usually recommend a red lip for every occasion, I would stick with a nude lip here: too much red and green can result in a holiday disaster! As for hair, beachy waves or even a fishtail braid will be stellar. With stunning hair and makeup, who’s going to notice your sweater?

Do Rock a Miniskirt

While proportions are important with every outfit, they are especially crucial with such a festive ensemble. The holiday sweaters I’ve seen are pretty frumpy, which is so not collegiette™!  If we need to wear one of these sweaters, let’s make it look young-ish by showing off our figures! For this look, add a fitted miniskirt– or skinny jeans- and a pair of riding boots to your sweater.

Don’t Let an Ugly Holiday Sweater Control Your Whole Outfit

Wearing a hideous holiday sweater is one thing; letting it control your whole ensemble is another! After all, we fashionistas have a rep to protect. To give this less-than-chic sweater a fashion forward spin, it’s all about accessories!  Try rocking a glitzy headband or edgy jewelry. If you’re into layering, find a fitted sweater and pile on a leather jacket and a textured scarf. Your outfit will go from “ow” to “wow.”

Do Go Vintage

For lack of a better term, an ugly holiday sweater is like a costume: you shouldn’t spend too much money on it.  Not only do vintage stores and second-hand shops have some uber festive sweaters, these holiday finds are also inexpensive at these stores. As collegiettes™, we do love a good bargain!

Don’t Take it Too Seriously!

Unless you’re Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones’ Diary, I doubt anyone wants to wear these sweaters. It’s necessary to give this sweater a stylish spin, but let’s not forget to have fun with it. You don’t want to be that Debbie Downer in the corner who didn’t join in on the holiday fun. I’m sure most of the other partiers would rather wear a stylish, cozy sweater. Instead of being embarrassed, laugh it off!  Or better yet, use it as a conversation starter with that cute guy you’ve been eyeing.
