Everyone has a color in their wardrobe that can be incorporated into any outfit. For years, this staple color was black. You wore black heels to match with a pantsuit or a sleek dress. You saw black coats that added a luxe feel to any winter look. Black faux leather pants spiced up a rather blah blouse for a girls’ night out on the town. The new “black” in fashion this year is one that no one would expect: sage green.

Sage green is replacing black as the staple color of choice to give life to any outfit, whether it is chill or chic, business or party. Sage green became popular on TikTok and Pinterest as Gen Z started incorporating it into the popular aesthetics of today’s age: cottagecore, grunge, soft. Now, sage green has made it to the top in fashion as a staple color for many. With spring fast approaching, sage green provides all the earthy feels to take your wardrobe to the next level. Though it’s a bold color, styling it does not have to be so intimidating. Here are some simple ways to incorporate sage green into your everyday look.

Play with colors
Pretty Little Thing

Neutrals aren’t completely out of the picture. Sage green compliments bold browns to create a sophisticated look. It can also be paired with muted tones to compose a chic statement. Grab those brown trousers that have been sitting in the back of your closet and pair them with a sage green mock neck or be the boss lady that you are and pair an all-white pantsuit with a sage green blouse to make a fashion statement in your office.

On the more casual days, sage green is great for a fun and fresh look when paired with light-washed denim. Sage green is the breath of fresh air when your wardrobe seems dull. Brands like ASOS, Nordstrom and H&M have a wide selection of neutral pants that can be paired with a sage green top of your choosing to fulfill a minimalist’s dream.

Accessories are a must

Rings, necklaces and earrings, oh my! When you’re a newbie to accessorizing, knowing what to pair with what pieces can be intimidating. Luckily, sage green goes well with any gold accents. Gold chunky hoops are a must-have in your jewelry collection. Not only do they pair well with sage green, but they elevate any outfit to the next level.

If you’re not an earring lover, layering necklaces is the next best thing. Finding two or three gold chains and pairing them with a sage green turtleneck or baby tee makes people think you’re a professional at accessorizing — even if you’re new to the game.

If you’re not comfortable with jewelry, purses and sunglasses are just as important. Sage green does not have to be strictly worn in clothing. Put together a monochromatic brown or beige outfit and pair it with a sage green purse as a pop of color. The same goes for sunglasses. This will allow you to add sage green, but without the commitment of a full outfit. Amazon has got your back for all your accessory needs: they have gold hoops ($14) and even sage green handbags ($36).

It’s all in the shoe

Sage green be a bold move that not everyone is ready for. Take baby steps into the sage green world by incorporating it into your shoe of choice. Shoes are the clothing item that can either make or break an outfit. Again, commit to sage green without actually committing with the help of a light sneaker or classy pump. Pair any sage green shoe with a neutral outfit or even a monochromatic green look. You can’t go wrong with iconic Chuck Taylors. Converse has a large selection of Chuck Taylors that will fulfill your earthy-toned desires.

Dress it up or dress it down

ASOS

Much like black used to be, sage green is being showcased in every style from sweatpants to pantsuits, and from blazers to jackets. This new staple color is versatile and can fulfill your fashion needs on a rainy day or a day in the office. For days that are spent relaxing and binge-watching your new favorite Netflix series, grab a sage green matching lounge set, like this one from Nasty Gal ($44). These matching sets will allow you to be up to date on the latest fashion trends from the comfort of your couch.

On the days that you want to bring out your inner fashionista, bust out a sage green blazer or coat to make a fashion power move. Pair these iconic pieces with a wide leg pant or chic trousers to create a boss babe look. Like Ciara would say, “level up, level up” with a bootie or sleek pump. Missguided has the perfect sage green blazer ($21) to add that spice you’re looking for.

Hints of luxe

Pretty Little Thing

Playing with textures can take any piece from drab to fab. When it comes to sage green, experimenting with different textures and materials brings life to your outfit. Spring is just around the corner and with that comes spring fashion. When it’s time to bust out those tank tops, opt for a silky sage green top that will give you room to breathe, but still elevate your style to be more luxe. On the bottom half, go bold with a faux leather sage green pant like this one from PrettyLittleThing ($30). Items that touch the border of cute and classy will give your wardrobe flavor.

Whether you’re fully committing to the new staple color or taking baby steps to incorporate it, sage green has a place in your wardrobe for any mood you’re feeling. If you want to be business chic, go bold with a sage green pantsuit. If you want to dial it down, opt for a sage green lounge set. Play with colors and textures to find what sage green works for you. Styling it can be made easy with accessories and shoes. Being bold does not have to be scary.
