A lot changes when we leave home for college, including the makeup and hairstyles we covet. What might have been cool just a few short years ago (Snooki poufs, anyone?) looks awkwardly outdated today. Three Her Campus staff members dug out old photos from high school to share how they’ve changed up their beauty routines:
Stephanie, Then and Now:
“In high school, I sat out in the sun a lot, so I was very tan, and I had blonde highlights. Now, I don’t sit out in the sun as much so I’m much paler, and my hair is my natural, dark brown color.” – Stephanie Kaplan, Harvard ’10, Her Campus Co-Founder, CEO, and Editor-in-Chief.
Nicole, Then and Now:
“In high school, I used to go tanning a lot. I guess it was the ‘cool’ thing to do back then, but I haven’t been in a tanning bed since 2008! I wear a lot less makeup than I did in high school, and I wear my hair curly more often than I did in high school, too. My hair is naturally curly and I felt self-conscious about it in high school.” – Nicole Karlis, University of Iowa ’11, Her Campus Contributing Writer.
Jess, Then and Now:
“Cutting my long locks was the biggest change I made – I went from below the shoulder to just above the chin. I had always loved the look of an angled bob, so I gradually cut my hair shorter and shorter as the first day of college loomed near. I have embraced my blue eyes and now use blue eyeliner instead of black. It makes my eyes pop and is less alarming in my high school days, when I looked as though I was punched in the eye in some photos! Part of it was wanting to be different from my high school self – the whole ‘college is the time to reinvent yourself’ spiel – but another (major) part was shortening my morning routine.” – Jess Corry, The College of New Jersey ’12, TCNJ Campus Correspondant
The verdict:
These three collegiettes™ embraced their natural beauty by stepping away from tanning beds and unflattering shades of makeup. Today, Stephanie, Nicole, and Jess all look fresh-faced, chic, and modern.Â
