Highlighting The Essentials: Neon Bags

As a lover of dark and/or neutral colors (meaning I love winter fashion and my friends constantly make fun of my affinity to taupe), you can probably imagine my dismay upon learning that neon is bigger than ever this season. I’ve been slowly introducing brighter and brighter colors into my wardrobe: transitioning from burnt orange to tangerine, choosing OPI’s Domestic Goddess over Lincoln Park After Dark and going out in cobalt blue pumps versus nude ones.

The next step? Neon. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want a smooth transition into the world of blinding hues, and one colorful option I’m loving is the neon handbag. Its statement piece-status makes it a fine addition to any neutral outfit, or if you’re really into the trend, will only accentuate a pair of colored jeans or a bright top.

Eye-Catching Satchel

The satchel is one of the most versatile bags available. It’s super chic for school, is appropriate for the office (though we wouldn’t recommend neon!) and transitions well from day to night. This hot pink Steven by Steve Madden Crossbody Bag ($98, Nordstrom) will incite both voluntary and involuntary double takes and would look great with a pair of white jeans.

Bright Trimmings

If you’re not quite ready to go all out, a bag with neon accents, such as along the trim, is a good place to start. This cavernous Aldo HIPPS duffel/tote ($55, Aldo) features subtle color but because it’s juxtaposed against a stone white, stands out as a defining feature.

Full Transparency

Another major trend this season is the PVC, transparent plastic look. But unless your bag is the most organized one on campus, you’re not going to want one that shows off the jumble of pens, books, extra gym clothes and late night snacks you’ve tossed into your tote. If it’s your look, this MICHAEL Michael Kors Frosted Jelly Tote ($117.60, Bloomingdale’s) would make a fantastic beach tote, for all of you going to formals or prepping for summer!
