4 Ways to Update Your Closet for Fall Without Spending (Literally) Any Money

I think it is safe to say that fall might be every style-savvy girl’s favorite season when it comes to fashion. The one downside? The excitement of fall fashion makes it hard to avoid the temptation of doing a little extra online shopping around this time. Trust me, we’ve all been there, and so have our bank accounts.

Not to worry! For the sake of your budget and my own, I have compiled a list of tried-and-true tips that are sure to give your budget a break while totally updating your closet for the fall. So, to spread the wealth, here are my top five favorite tips for achieving some serious style points during the fall ,while staying well within your budget.

Set up a Depop account

This summer, it felt like the popularity of Depop increased astronomically – and I am here for it. As an easy way for young people to sell and buy clothing (and a wide variety of other items), it’s hard not to buy into the hype. That is exactly why I urge you to take advantage of this handy app for the fall!

Not only is it like online thrifting, but you can search for specific items and contact sellers directly to negotiate pricing. Even better, sell your own clothing items that you haven’t worn in years to earn a little cash for that cool-weather jacket you’ve been looking for!

Raid your relative’s wardrobe

Have you ever asked someone where they got their cool vintage t-shirt and they responded, “it’s my Grandma’s.” Well, it’s time we all take advantage of the fact that what’s old is new again, and that means capitalizing on the vintage wardrobe items that might be in your midst without you even knowing.

Ask your dad if he has any old flannels or sweaters, or your grandmother if she has any cool accessories that were her favorites when she was your age. Odds are, you’re bound to come across some seriously one-of-a-kind items.

Have a clothing swap

This can be done over Zoom with friends or during a movie-night with roommates. Either way, having a clothing swap night with friends is a fun and easy way to find a cute new clothing item (or two) without having to pay a cent. Simply have you and your friends select a few pieces of clothing that you don’t wear anymore, and commence the swapping!

Layer summer pieces into fall outfits

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your favorite strappy dress. As shown above, you can totally make these pieces fall-friendly by layering a t-shirt or a button-up underneath as an extra layer and for some serious style points. When it comes to layering, the options are endless!

There you have it, all of the best ways to update your wardrobe for the fall without having to break the bank. Be sure to tag us on Instagram @hercampus and @cfashionista to show off how you plan on updating your wardrobe this fall using these tips!
