Faux or Real?: The Mystery of Fur

It’s easy to tell the faux bags and shoes from the real counterpart, all you have to do is take a look at the inside. But fur isn’t as easy to tell (at least for me). Fur vests are a very popular trend for Fall 2010, so I decided to do a little research on the subject. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of faux fur (not the real thing). On this rainy day, I was I was very curious about this mystery. Here are the ways whether a fur vest, jacket, or scarf is real or faux?

1. Labels: Labels can reveal if a fur is fake or real, some designers produce real and fake furs so they specify on the label.

2. The Burn Test: According to Ebay.com, you should clip off a little bit of the fur and light a little piece with a match or lighter. If you can easily light the fur it’s faux, the real thing isn’t easily flammable.

3. The Pin Test: Take a pin and stick it through the base of the fur. If it is real fur the leather the pin will be hard to push through. It if is fake it will go right through the base.

4. The Look: Faux fur will generally be the same color and the hairs will be the same length. Real fur would contain different strand lengths and colors.
