Today’s shower time: 6 minutes and 47 seconds
The shower situation: right after a run, before dinner
Why you should come back tomorrow: to see the 2011 Illio and the scrumptious meal I’m cooking tonight
Since my weekends start Wednesday afternoon, I have a lot of time to get things done. I do a lot of reporting and cleaning on Thursday and Friday. I used to spend all of my spare time at work, but my role as an editor at Illini Media (U of I’s student run media company) came to a close shortly after spring break.
I’ll have to get a lot done tomorrow because there are a lot of people coming to visit this weekend (the actual weekend which for college kids begins Thursday night). My cousin Chris, my friend Sarah and my friend Liz are all making their way to Champaign-Urbana. I’m really going to need to shower quick to maximize time with these people I don’t see much of!
Sarah couldn’t have picked a more perfect time to visit. She’s been stuck waiting for me for five years. As a result, she loves this challenge as much as my family. I’m sure it’s really annoying to have to constantly sit in your friend’s room while she’s in the shower. Trip to the mall? Wait. Going to lunch? Wait. Taking our dogs on a walk? Wait. I cannot believe Sarah is still putting up with my showers. Maybe she enjoys my mom running upstairs every five minutes to tell me to hurry.
Sarah’s visit reminds me – I’ve learned a lot during the start of this challenge. First, I have incredible family and friends. It’s been great to hear from everyone. Second, it’s amazing how small things can make a big difference. Just by shortening my showers, I’m saving water. But it’s also getting people to talk about saving water.
A few more quick shower techniques I’ve stumbled upon:
1) Brush your hair before the shower. I have long hair and it takes a while to rinse. It’s much easier if rinsing doesn’t involve detangling.
2) Play a song! Alex recommended that I do so and it is a great motivator. It’s fun to challenge yourself and to make that challenge involve music. Who doesn’t like music?
Please let me know if you have any water saving techniques. They don’t have to involve the shower!
Here’s a picture of Sarah and I from our junior prom and one from this past summer when I visited her in Minneapolis where she was interning. Also pictured is proof of my short (though not quite 3 minute) shower. I’ll keep a timer employed until short showers become second nature.
