D.I.Y. Halloween Costume: Minnie Mouse

Although our glory days at Magic Kingdom are unfortunately over, our love for all our favorite Disney characters is eternal. Exhibit A: Minnie Mouse. From her adorable personality to her role as Disney’s First Lady, we just can’t get enough of her. This Halloween, pay homage to our favorite leading lady. But what if you’re on a budget? After all, those pre-packaged costumes can cost a pretty penny. As always, my lovely style savants, I’m here to help! Behold my tips for creating your very own Minnie Mouse ensemble.

The Makeup

This costume’s beauty front demands femininity. Pile on the mascara for eye-popping lashes and add a cat-eye if you’re feeling super creative. Since you can’t leave the dorm with a naked lip, paint your pout a bold red (preferably the same red as your ensemble). For a finishing touch, draw an oval on your nose with an eye pencil. Can we say adorable?

The Dress
Though Minnie occasionally mixes up colors, prints, and silhouettes, she adores a traditional red dress with white polka dots. If you don’t own a chic alternative to her uniform, it’s time to get creative. Instead, you can easily match a red and white polka dotted skirt with a white tee, or mix a black shirt with a red and white polka dotted shirt. Don’t have any of those? Hope isn’t lost just yet! Take your trusty red skirt and that old tee you’re dying to throw out. Cut small circles from that ratty shirt and tape them to your skirt. Head to the nearest thrift shop if you’re not willing to get crafty with your own threads. Though it would require more cutting, you can do this with a red dress. Just make sure your dots are secured- you don’t want a wardrobe malfunction mid-party.

The Ears

She may be young, but the girl (or her mom) knows how to make stellar set of ears.

As everyone knows, Minnie is nothing without a set of fabulous ears. If your mom “misplaced” the ears you snagged at Disney World way back when, create your own! Cut two large circles from a cardboard box- thank the shopping gods that your latest Gilt purchase just came today-and color them black with a permanent marker. Next, tape the two circles to a thin headband. Last but not least, tape a red ribbon to the front of your ears. For a creative alternative, tie your hair in two high buns. Add a clip-on bow and voilá– your own set of ears.

The Shoes
Most fashionistas need a slew of different shoes to choose from; however, Minnie is simple – all she needs is her trusty yellow heels. If you have a pair of yellow shoes, whether they are loafers or pumps, wear them on Halloween night. If not, a pair of black heels or booties will be fine. Don’t forget to pair your kicks with tights—Halloween nights are usually chilly!
