Dad Hats Are Officially the New Mom Jeans, & Here’s How to Style Yours

It’s safe to say that 2018 has been rightfully dubbed year of Dad Style. From dad sneaks to dad jeans, and now even dad hats, it’s the year for dressing like our fathers. But in a cool way. Dads have become style icons on the streets to high-fashion runways. If you took your favorite ’90s sitcom suburban dad and placed him in the middle of the street or on in a Balenciaga runway show, he’d look right at home.

Baggy jeans, oversized sweatshirts, and New Balance-esque sneakers are comfortable and practical, so it’s no wonder that they’ve become so popular. Whether you’re trying to emulate an entire “dad” look with ugly sneakers, light wash jeans and a Hawaiian shirt, or if you just want to add a tiny bit of daddy-o to your style, you might want to consider completing the look with a dad hat. A Her Campus dad hat, to be more specific.

Now available on the HC Shop, these dad hats are perfect to wear with your favorite outfit, your best baggy button down, or your bathing suit at the beach. If you don’t think that hats are really your thing, don’t worry – these ones definitely are. And we’ve put together some super easy styling tips to help get you started.

Make it girly.

Either dress up your hat with a girly gingham skirt and denim jacket, or throw it on with your favorite floral blouse. These hats go perfectly with anything, even a frilly sundress. Nothing is off limits when it comes to dad-style. (I mean, have you seen some of the things that dads get away with wearing?)

Incorporating denim somewhere into your outfit helps you still achieve the dad vibe you may or may not be going for, even if you aren’t wearing a full-on jean.

Make it casual.

You don’t have to completely embody dad style, you can just add a small taste of “casual average suburbanite” to your look. Pairing your cap with a simple tee is the safe and easy way to go, but if you want kick the classic look up a notch, we have some ~suggestions~.

A cotton tank top with a cool neckline, or a cropped tee with a ruffled trim, add just the right amount of fun to a generally casual pairing. Your favorite pair of distressed denim is the perfect thing to complete this pared-down look.

Add some GRL PWR.

Show some feminine power with a hat that says it right across the front. Double down on the trend by wearing it with a women-focused slogan tee (you know, the ones that we’ve been seeing everywhere on Instagram).

Even though the future really is female, that doesn’t mean we can’t rock dad hats all day long.

And hey, your OOTD pictures will no longer be ruined by that annoying sun-in-eye squint.
