A Collegiette’s Guide to (New and Improved) Color Blocking

Fashionistas, it’s time to ship our cozy sweaters home and embrace all the fun trends spring has to offer.  While wearing an art deco-inspired dress to frat row tomorrow is a bit extreme, there’s one spring trend that continues to pass the test of time: color blocking. From red carpet reports to our favorite style blogs, color blocking is a trend every fashionista should try. After a few seasons of obsessively pairing your canary yellow shirt with those cobalt blue jeans, you’re probably a bit (dare I type it?) bored of color blocking. News flash, collgiettes : color blocking is here to stay! Instead of having a grin-and-bear it attitude, experiment with new and  different ways to color block.

Play with Patterns

Cardinal rule of collegiette fashion: never underestimate the power of prints. Instead of wearing a solid shirt and pants, add a pattern!  Styling  a blue and white striped shirt with your favorite pair of  coral jeans is perfection: the contrasting colors will still give your outfit that color blocking effect, but the white will soften the ensemble.  For a fierce evening look, sport your colored pants with a leopard shirt.

Invest in a Two-in-One Color Blocking Pieces

As chic as you are, you can never resist a good two in one product. Admit it: you sometimes scramble around your dorm just to find that shampoo-conditioner combo. Innovative designers, like Tibi’s Amy Smilovic, bring this two-in-one combo concept to the runway. If you haven’t invested in a two-in-one color blocked piece, I highly suggest you do: they’re major time savers. Just pair your outfit with strong, structured accessories and you’re ready to go!

Details, Details, Details!

Many fashionistas give this trend a minimalism twist.  To break away from this overdone (but super sleek) technique, add some “out of this world” details to your ensemble. From lace  shoes to an edgy bracelet, the details will give your outfit a boost of energy. Not only are details a great way to spice up this trend, they also show off your personal style.

Test the Textures!

You may be guilty of simply styling a bright, cotton shirt with a pair of  “eye-popping” jeans. While there’s nothing wrong with this outfit, play with different textures and fabrics to break free from your color blocking slump. Not only does a sheer shirt give your outfit a dash of sex appeal, the light fabric is also  perfect for the spring. Or try some lace shorts in a funky color: lace has never looked so cool!  If you love taking fashion risks as much as Rihanna, try pairing  two alternative fabrics together!

With these fun takes on the universally adored trend, you no longer have to think of color blocking as a chic chore!
