How I Lived Out My Coastal Granddaughter Outfit Dreams In A Coastal Grandma Town

Coming home to my hometown from college has brought a dramatic shift in my wardrobe. Goodbye bright, bold statement looks. Hello, relaxing sweats. I’m sure every college kid goes through this change to some extent. But does your hometown’s dress code follow one of the biggest style trends right now? The Coastal Grandma trend is taking the nation by storm, and it just so happens to be the staple style in my coastal hometown.

Located just a half hour outside of Boston, Massachusetts, is a charming small town called Swampscott. I grew up right around this town, which is known for its picturesque seaside coastlines and nautical nature. This area embraces a modest aesthetic that pairs together neutral hues with various shades of blue, earning Swampscott the name of “Big Blue.” Practically all of the locals around here have that light, easy-breezy look.

I have always been surrounded by this preppy fashion sense, and even used to wear it when I was little. Although it may have originated from an older generation, Gen Z has introduced another version of the Coastal Grandma trend, fittingly called the Coastal Granddaughter. Its basis includes the same nautical, chic vibes of the Coastal Grandma, but with a fashionable, youthful twist.

While I’ve personally grown out of this fashion trend, I decided to get nostalgic and try on cool Coastal Grandmother-inspired clothes again. Here are seven of my favorite crisp, clean, cozy essentials to live out your Coastal Granddaughter dreams and stay cool this summer — regardless of whether you live near the coast.

Linen Pants

Linen pants give me a relaxed yet stylish look for any of my summer ‘fits. Even though I have been wearing them more casually, they’re also perfect for more dressy occasions. I love my white Cotton On Lolly Pinstripe Sunny Flare Pants because they are so comfy to slip on, yet they have a classy vibe that makes them suitable for going out on the town. The breathable fabric allows excellent airflow, keeping me cool even in hot and humid weather.

Basic Tanks

I live by this American Eagle navy tank all summer — it’s a staple in my Coastal Granddaughter wardrobe. The rich, blue color adds a nautical charm and complements classic neutrals. The ribbed texture is simple, while the delicate lace trim adds elegance. I can style this tank effortlessly with shorts, skirts, or jeans for any casual or semi-formal outing. It’s definitely a better choice for my summer capsule wardrobe rather than all these statement tops I typically wear at school.

Light crochet sweater

While you might think sweaters might be too heavy for the upcoming hot summer months, I actually love wearing them — especially on evenings that bring in a cool, coastal breeze. I have always found sweaters to provide the perfect balance between comfort and style. They allow me to layer up while still maintaining a fashionable seaside look. I enjoy layering these airy, open-knit sweaters over tops or even dresses.

Birkenstocks

While people might make fun of them, I love wearing my Birkenstocks. These sandals effortlessly slide onto my feet. With their timeless design and warm brown color, they exude a classic appeal that complements any outfit. Whether I’m running errands downtown or spending a day at the beach, my Birkenstocks are the easiest footwear choice for me.

Gold Jewelry

During the winter months, I prefer silver, but in summer, I love embracing the golden shine. Layering my golden jewelry enhances my sunkissed skin and gives me a luxurious feel. Whether it’s earrings, necklaces, or rings, I effortlessly embody a timeless seaside glamour. One of my favorite pieces in my collection are my Mejuri hoops — they add that extra touch of chic, and perfectly complete the ensemble with their golden allure.

Longchamp tote bag

I take this bag everywhere! It’s my go-to accessory because it offers both functionality and style. I appreciate how it easily accommodates all my summer essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, a beach towel, or even a captivating book. And its waterproof material enhances its coastal charm, as I could use it during a day at the beach or at an oceanfront dinner party.

Light blue perfume

I love finishing off my Coastal Granddaughter look with an airy yet delicate scent. Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana is a refreshing fragrance that complements my seaside atmosphere. Its aquatic and citrus elements remind me of salty skin or a nice, breezy walk down the shore. I carry a little roller version everywhere I go — not only to add a fresh touch to my day, but also to remind me of home.
