Whether we like it or not, winter is coming, collegiettes, which means we’ll have to add on a few more layers than usual before we venture outside our dorms. But how can we stack on those layers without looking like Eskimos? Here are a few tips for layering like a pro (while keeping your figure slim and trim!).

1. Stick to a maximum of three layers.

When it comes to the top half of your body, avoiding too many layers will keep you from looking too bulky. Try using a plain camisole or fitted cotton T-shirt for your first layer, a lighter cardigan or button down shirt for your second, and a heavier jacket, blazer, shrug, or trench coat for your topmost layer.

2. Keep under-layers more fitted.

Wear your thinnest garment (usually a camisole or T-shirt) closest to your skin to keep your shape looking slim.

3. Wear loose-fitting apparel on top.

Your thickest, least form-fitting layer (usually a jacket or coat) should be worn as your outmost layer.

4. Wear longer pieces towards the bottom.

Length is key when layering, and it’s best to pair a longer sweater or shirt with a shorter outer layer.

5. Incorporate a mix of textured materials.

Using all of the same fabrics will come off as looking heavy and dowdy (and can add the appearance of unwanted weight!).

6. Avoiding layering garments with the same style.

Layering should allow the style of each piece to stand out, so if you layer two pieces with the same style (such as a ruffled shirt with a ruffled blazer) the look can become lost.

7. Mix and match patterns with solids.

By pairing a patterned inner layer with a basic-colored jacket (such as camel, black, navy, or olive green), that bold pattern will really pop!

8. Top off your look with something belted.

If you’re concerned about your waistline, this is the great way to give your outfit some structure.

9. Add some accessories.

In the colder months, scarves always make for the perfect finishing touch!
