Campus-Friendly Monochrome Fashion

Seen on the Spring 2012 runways of Yigal Azrouel, Preen, and Bottega Veneta (left to right, below) monochromatic looks are among the hottest upcoming trends this season — but wearing all one color is a lot easier to do on the runway than the real way.

So how does a collegiette™ rock the single-color look on campus? The key to being on point is to go all out. To avoid looking like a walking popsicle, it’s important to mix textures — leather with knits, knits with silks, silks with sheers, and so on.

Colored skinnies work well for monochromatic outfits; a single-colored look can often be overwhelming, so fitted items work well to streamline the look. Fitted isn’t for everybody, though, so a maxi skirt with a cozy cardigan keeps the look clean without clinging. For a mixture of the two, a form-fitting dressed with a layered, ruffled blazer makes for a look that transitions from day to night. In the world of high fashion, matching colors perfectly is absolutely necessary, but when you’re doing it the real way, a little variation can make it easier to pull the look off on campus. So what’s your favorite color — and how are you going to show it off on campus this season?
