Best and Worst Looks from Last Week’s Award Shows

Awards season is officially underway, which means that from now until the Oscars we have multiple opportunities to applaud or ridicule the couture gowns worn by Hollywood A-Listers as they make appearance after appearance on the red carpet.  Last week, neither the Critic’s Choice Awards nor the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards disappointed, as starlets from all over the country converged in one perfectly coiffed heap of sartorial satisfaction.  Here are some of Her Campus’s favorite looks from the Critic’s Choice Awards and the SAG Awards . . . as well as some that we think missed the mark.

Critic’s Choice Awards: Best Dressed

1. Sandra Bullock

Can she do no wrong?  Sandra Bullock looked gorgeous in a tiered Lanvin gown.  The silhouette was perfect on the 49-year-old’s rockin’ body.

2. Lupita Nyong’o

We couldn’t get over the stark white color or Lupita Nyong’o’s Calvin Klein gown.  Her body, makeup, and hair all looked fabulous; every eye was on her!

3. Amy Adams

Amy’s pink Roland Mouret gown was simple, but interesting, with a unique neckline and sweet black belt.  The color looked great on her skin tone, and made us want to be pretty in pink, too!

Critic’s Choice Awards: Worst Dressed

1. Melissa McCarthy

Don’t get us wrong, we love Melissa as much as the next girl, but this dress is wayyyy too busy.  McCarthy designed it herself, along with her stylist, which we give her props for, but the fit just isn’t quite right and the print is too distracting.

2. Abigail Breslin

We get that Abigail is trying to grow out of her child star image, but this Badgley Mischka gown looks more like our grandma’s nightgown than a red-carpet ready ensemble.  Keep trying Abigail, you’re close!

3. Meryl Streep

Though she usually kills it on the red carpet, Meryl left us a little disappointed this time around.  Her Stella McCartney dress was shapeless and unflattering, and we didn’t get the tuxedo stripes, either.

SAG Awards: Best Dressed

1. Amy Adams

Amy does it again with this Antonio Berardi number.  Toeing the line between sexy and skanky, Adams managed to keep it classy while looking hot.  Where can we find a cobalt dress??

2. Lupita Nyong’o

Packing a One-Two Punch, Lupita stole the show again at the SAG Awards with this beautiful Gucci gown.  The 12 Years a Slave star definitely grabbed our attention this week, thanks to her brightly hued gowns and form-fitting silhouettes!

3. Michelle Dockery

Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery shows she’s definitely not a real life Lady Mary in this tastefully revealing J. Mendel gown.  The contrast of black and white perfectly mimicked her milky complexion and dark locks. Paired with a pop of red on her lips? Parfait!

SAG Awards: Worst Dressed

1. Kerry Washington

We’ll give it to Kerry that dressing up when you’re pregnant is pretty difficult to begin with, especially when millions of eyes are going to be on you. That being said, the Scandal star’s Prada crop top was a little weird. The proportions weren’t quite right, though we will say Washington’s skin looked superb! Must be that pregnancy glow.

2. Cate Blanchett

Cate’s pale pink Givenchy number left us feeling awkward and confused. The strange sequined flap on the front was bizarre, and the halter seemed too young for the wonderfully mature actress.

3. Mariah Carey

Can someone please bring Mariah into the 21st century PLEASE? With the fishnet tights, leather fingerless gloves, and one-shouldered mini dress, we couldn’t help but feel that the singer was a little out of place on an awards show red carpet. Couldn’t the queen of glitz and glam have stepped it up a little bit more?
