Behind the Scenes at College Fashion Week Raleigh

Her Campus’s third stop in Raleigh for College Fashion Week™ sponsored by U by Kotex took was a huge hit! Students from UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University and North Carolina State University came together at Mirage Night Club in Raleigh, N.C. to watch their peers model four fabulous sets of clothing that every fashionable collegiette in attendance couldn’t help but drool over.

We were lucky enough to get an inside look into the minds of the student models before they strutted their stuff down the runway. Here’s a backstage glance:

HC: How did you become a model for College Fashion Week™?

Katie (N.C. State): I’m on the Her Campus team at N.C. State and the opportunity came up. I want to get into modeling anyways, so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to test it out and see if I liked runway.
Dayna (Duke): I’m the social media chair for our chapter of Her Campus at Duke and we wanted a lot of execs to volunteer, so Sabrina our co-founder volunteered and I was the only other one staying here over fall break. It’s a cool thing to take part in, so we wanted to set an example for the other members of the team.
Elena (UNC): I actually was randomly messaged by a girl I had class with a couple of years ago, and she just brought up that it was happening. I was very surprised at first because I’m 5’2”, but she was like “no it’s not that sort of thing, we’re very open and we just want you to come out for it!”

HC: Do you have any prior modeling experience?

Dayna (Duke): No, absolutely not. I’m terrified! I’m definitely a little weird and awkward on the runway, but I’m excited, so it should be fun.
Ashley (Duke): Not runway, only photo shoots.
Elena (UNC): I have absolutely no prior modeling experience. I think when I was five my mom signed me up for a cereal commercial and I quit because I wanted to play dinosaurs outside instead.

HC: What has been your favorite part of today?

Katie (N.C. State): Picking the clothes out, getting the makeup done, going and testing out the runway – it’s all been good.
Dayna (Duke): Trying on the outfits definitely. Especially getting to see what looks best on my body. I’ve never thought of my body in that way before – in terms of what I would wear versus what looks good on me that I can’t see.
Ashley (Duke): I think being able to meet other people from the Triangle area. There are some cool girls here that I probably wouldn’t have been able to meet otherwise.
Elena (UNC): I think every girl really likes being made-up. That doesn’t happen very often, I never even got that for prom, so it’s been really fun to have a professional makeup artist and a professional designer giving us outfits and doing our hair and makeup. It’s been really cool.

HC: What are you most excited for tonight?

Katie (N.C. State): The dress that I’m going to wear for the weekend outfit!
Ashley (Duke): Just the energy of the crowd. I’m excited to see the place all filled up and the lights down and everything.
Elena (UNC): I think I’m most excited, but also nervous for the actual walk. I’m excited to see everything come to fruition. It’s been such a long day it’s going to be fun to see how all this comes together. I’m sure it’s going to be crazy, but it will pay off.

HC: What’s your favorite look this fall?

Katie (N.C. State): High riding boots with skinny jeans and a cute top.
Dayna (Duke): Those round scarves, they’re my favorite thing! If I could put three of them on my head, I would. They’re so comfy and amazing.
Ashley (Duke): I’m just excited to be back in my boots.
Elena (UNC): Peplum, I love peplum. I’m lucky enough to get to wear this awesome leopard-print peplum dress tonight. I think it’s very feminine and vintage and I like that a lot.
