ASOS is Selling a Jean Waistband (Yes, Just a Waistband) & We Just Want to Know Why

Looking for a revolutionary new accessory to spice up all of your outfits? Behold, the new denim waistband, newly released from ASOS, retailing for $29. Its patent “just cut off the top portion of your old pair of jeans” design will make any outfit look stunning…right? ASOS dropped its new denim belt/waistband this past week and its function and style have people’s heads turning for sure. As mentioned previously, the waistband retails for $29 on the ASOS website, is made with 100% cotton and comes in one-size. For that price range, the new denim belt can be considered a relatively expensive accessory. But is it really worth the cost? You could probably get a decent pair of “whole” jeans for about the same price.

ASOS has an interesting way of describing the garment as well, saying it features “button fastening”, a “raw hem”, and most comically, “an unfinished finish”. Well, they got that right, at least. ASOS models the waistband as a belt on top of another pair of pants, showing off a double-waist button waistband design. The double waistband look could definitely appeal to some but could still confuse others. Maybe pairing the waistband with a pair of sweatpants could be an interesting combination as well or a plain short skirt.

The big question though is, do you really need to buy a $29 denim “belt”, when you could realistically find an old pair of jeans and just cut the waistband off? You would know that it fits you perfectly as well, instead of risking the one-size fit of ASOS’s belt. Twitter didn’t really take kindly to the belt as well, seeming pretty skeptical of the growing “denim craze” across fashion brands. Has it all just gone too far?

While we’re all here for the growing denim aesthetic in this year’s fashion, let’s not forget that fashion doesn’t have to be insensible. This belt, while it may be just what some people are looking for, definitely calls that into question.
