While everyone loves a classic cable knit sweater for winter, this winter 2022 season has brought with it an influx of sexy, sheer sweaters. Impractical? Maybe. But who said fashion had to be practical? While I don’t recommend stepping out into freezing temps in a sheer sweater sans coat (your mom was right, wear a jacket), this fun style is a great trend for winter. Addison Rae, an early adopter of the latest Gen Z trends, posted on Instagram on Dec. 15 wearing a sheer sweater dress that truly embodies this sheer sweater trend.
Rae’s exact dress is The Gaia Dress (€210) from Rentre. If Rae is any indication of what the next trends are, it’s safe to say sheer knits are going to be huge in 2023. Marc Rofsky, Director of Buying of Ready-to-Wear at Moda Operandi, told Marie Claire on Dec. 14, “If there is one universal trend from the runways, it is that skin is in! Designers are standing for female empowerment and for women to be in control of their bodies.”
Much like the sexual revolution of the 1960s that brought about micro mini skirts, recent uncertainty about women’s rights in light of Roe v. Wade being overturned may be the catalyst for skin-baring styles.
