8 Easy Ways to Look 5 Pounds Thinner Instantly

Balancing schoolwork, classes, internships and extracurriculars means that sometimes we just don’t have time for the gym. While we at Her Campus would never suggest you slack on exercise, sometimes you just want a quick trick to look fit and fab. Great news, collegiettes: simply selecting the right clothing choices can make you look at least five pounds thinner! Follow this guide to put together the most flattering looks so you can still look great without working up a sweat (we won’t tell anyone!)

1. Stick to One Color

Putting together a monochromatic look creates a vertical line, elongating your body. We’ve all heard that black is super slimming – and that is no myth! “Sticking to one solid, dark color will make your whole body look thinner,” says Jennifer McAllister, a stylist for Macy’s. The darker the hue, the more flattering it is. Too gloomy of a look for you? Add a fun pair of shoes or a colorful bag for a pop of color!

2. Choose Vertical Lines

We’re not just talking stripes (although that works, too). Adding draping pieces to your outfit creates vertical lines, which makes your body look longer and distracts from your midsection. Long necklaces and scarves will do the trick; the different textures make for a cute and put-together look. Be careful not too go overboard and add too much texture, though—one long necklace or a slim scarf will make all the difference!

3. Wear Dark Jeans

A pair of well-fitting jeans will make you look and feel amazing. Pick a dark wash for an extra slimming effect (in any fit you are comfortable with). Avoid faded coloring or fancy pockets – these draw unnecessary attention to potential problem areas.

“If you are tall and slim, high-waisted is a big trend right now and gives you a very flattering figure,” says Kyle Walker, a stylist for American Eagle Outfitters. “It hugs your silhouette in all the right places.”

Every body type is different, so find the fit that works for you. Short and curvy? Find a solid dark boot cut with simple back pockets to create a minimizing look. Invest in one really good pair that you will always feel confident in, and you can look slim and sexy in many different outfits

4. Wear a V-Neck

Whether you’re rocking a casual tee to class or a fancy, flowy top for night, a V-shaped neckline is the way to go. A V-neck draws attention away from your midsection and creates an illusion of a lengthened torso. “This cut shows off your collarbone and décolleté areas, which makes you look longer and leaner,” McAllister says. “No matter what shape or size you are, this cut will look great on you!”

However, be careful not to get a neckline that’s too low—a little bit goes a long way!

5. Rock a Pair of Heels

As long as you can walk somewhat comfortably, throwing on heels is the perfect way to make your legs look long and thin. Don’t limit yourself to just pumps; ankle booties, heeled boots and wedges will all make you look great. If you’re rocking a dress or a skirt, wearing a pair similar to your skin tone will make the smoothest line. If you’re in pants, any heels will give your shape extra length! An additional bonus: “These sexy shoes will tighten your leg muscles, making them defined,” says Walker.

6. Choose A-line Styles

Going for a dressier look today? No matter your shape, this simple style will flatter you. It cinches in your waist, which accentuates the smallest part of your body. “This style is perfect for curvier girls,” Walker says. “The cut of the skirt or dress disguises any problem areas you may have. It skims over your hips and thighs.”

Whether you want to dress it down for day or up for night, this simple style will have you looking your best no matter where you’re going!

7. Accentuate Your Waist

A flowy top or dress cinched at the smallest part of your waist will make you look tiny! The easiest way to do this is with a belt; it will work whether the belt is thick or skinny. Also, a belt adds dimension and visual interest to your outfit, keeping things interesting.

Another great way to accentuate your waist is to wear a peplum top. “Peplum is a really flattering top for any size girl because it creates a pronounced waistline and a sexy silhouette,” Walker says. This classic cut comes in many different styles, so you’re bound to find one that suits you beautifully!

8. Stand up Straight

The easiest way to look five pounds lighter is to throw back your shoulders and keep your back straight, which makes you look leaner and taller. Practicing good posture will make you look your best, regardless of what else you wear!  Check out how to get better posture here.

As collegiettes, we all struggle with looking our absolute best, especially with all the unhealthy foods and beverages making their way into our routines. Remember: dressing to look thinner won’t actually make you healthier, so if you find time in your busy schedule, try to fit a workout in here or there. In the meantime, try out these tips.
