It’s remarkable that one week can dictate an entire season worth of clothes. But New York Fashion Week is just that powerful and this year’s designers did not disappoint. Check out my picks for the 5 tops trends seen on the Fall 2011 runways.
1) Black is Back
This fall, black is regaining its position as the #1 hue in fashion land. From tough blazers to elegant gowns, this always sophisticated color made an appearance on every runway.

2) Victorian Sensibility

Marc Jacobs
Lacey details and high collared necklines ran rampant this season. Jason Wu, March Jacobs, and Alice and Olivia were a few of my favorite designers who paid homage to the Victorian era. And while we haven’t reverted completely back to the 1800’s, adding a touch of lace or a high neckline will keep you right on trend for fall.Â
3) Slouch a Little More
Michael Kors
Draping adds an understated sexiness to almost any ensemble and I was thrilled to see it on gowns, sweaters, and almost everything in between. The silhouette of the draped pieces is loose and slinky, but details like belts, structured shoulders, and the wildly popular slit up the leg, give this look a sexy vibe with an undeniable cool factor.
4) Embrace the Jumpsuit
While many dismissed it as a fleeting fad, the Fall 2011 runways proved the jumpsuit is here to stay and it’s hotter than ever. Last summer, we embraced the short and frilly romper, but this fall it’s all about the seventies. From paisley prints to silk fabrics, the jumpsuit came in many different personalities this season, but the long silhouette and wide pant leg remained consistent throughout.

5) Staying Warm is Oh-So-Chic
United Bamboo
As a student living in the northeast, I appreciate this functional fashion trend more than the fashion gods will ever know. No longer do I have to freeze for the sake of fashion. Now I can bundle up in one of the gorgeous and equally cozy coats featured all over the Spring 2011 runways.
