I’ll admit it—I have done terrible things to my hair. There was a long period in high school when I would straighten it every single day (my poor, poor hair cuticles), and split ends and snapping strands were pretty much a constant occurrence. For years my locks have suffered and have been in desperate need of a little TLC, so I’ve been trying to strengthen them up ever since. Read on for some tips for getting stronger, healthier and more beautiful hair—and how to get some free hair strengthening products of your own!
1. Start from the inside out.
Healthy hair starts with good nutrition! Protein and vitamin B5 are both very important for a healthy scalp and healthy hair, so make sure you get these in your diet. I make sure I get protein with every meal—some of my favorite protein sources are chicken, Greek yogurt and peanut butter. Vitamin B5 is also found in beans, whole grains, brown rice and (my personal favorite!) avocado.
2. Give your hair a few days off.
I know, I know—you can’t live without your hair dryer or flat iron. But using heat styling tools does a ton of damage to your hair, and the more time your locks have off from it, the better! Go au naturel and show off your beautiful natural hair texture every once in a while. If you’re truly afraid to let your hair loose without your trusty styling tools, try one of these updos!
3. Use a strengthening shampoo and conditioner.
Once the (hair) damage is done, there’s no better way to get your locks back on track than by using a strengthening shampoo and conditioner. I highly recommend L’Oreal’s Triple Resist Shampoo and Conditioner. After using this product, I can already tell that my hair is much stronger and resistant to breakage. While my hair used to fall out like crazy in the shower (gross, I know), less and less of it has been coming out when I wash it since I’ve started using these products! I can also tell a difference when I’m brushing my hair; it feels stronger, and it definitely doesn’t break as much as it used to. The shampoo and conditioner can be bought at any Walgreens, CVS or Duane Reade. 4. Use a strengthening leave-in treatment.
Along with the L’Oreal Triple Resist shampoo and conditioner, I started using the L’Oreal Triple Resist Ultimate Strength Solution every morning. To use the product, you spray it all over damp hair, concentrating on the roots, and massage gently to encourage circulation (so basically, you get an excuse to give yourself a head massage… ahh.). The leave-in treatment has been doing wonders on my hair along with the Triple Resist shampoo and conditioner!
